I think page 8 of this thread is what I'm looking for?

https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...t=86202&page=8

Thanks for info though guys, much appreciated. I thought I'd bought a diesel fan/2 speed controller given that the shrouds were the same.

Makes sense the buzzing from the relays would be the PWM signal, turning them on and off very quickly. I'll refit my 3 speed relay box tonight, convert the wiring for use with a 2 wire fan and hopefully get things spinning again!

edit... Simon, I can't see the pictures in the thread you linked to (blocked at work), but it reads as though it's the method to convert the 3 speed 4 wire fan into just running at two speeds by pairing up the brushes rather than rewiring it to work with a 2 wire fan.

Yes, Stocktake's procedure does indeed look exactly what you're looking for. Use that instead of my link.

The PWM signal doesn't control the relay coils directly. There's a whole load of electronics in the way!

Hi Andrew.
Yes that link above should se you right your control box will look like this below, the purple wire is done away with when converting.

1

What you will be re-routing your control box to but using one of the brown wires as a black, the other one is also done away with.

2

I will leave at that for now so not to much confusion is added, until you can tackle the change over, if you need anymore photo's let me know cheers Arctic.

Followed stocktake's diagram, I now have a working cooling fan! The 3 speed hadn't worked since I bought the car but it was never an issue until the recent hot weather when I really wished I had AC.

Appreciate all the advice given! If only I'd thought to check the relay box before I chopped my connectors off the diesel box... had to do a bit of additional soldering to make good but all sorted now.

The shorter fan shroud/cowling gave me false hope that it had come off a diesel which was clearly not the case.

Thanks all!

Hi Andrew.
excellent news yes the 1.8T has the same cowling as the diesel, some sellers even say that it will suit a diesel but evade saying that the wiring will need modifying you may need to have the gas checked on the car to make sure the A/C is working as it should, I read today we are in for a 3 week heat wave before the end of August & early September

The AC system was very recently regassed which spurred me on to replace the fan

While in for its MOT a few weeks ago, my friend at the garage asked me if the AC worked. I told him that it didn't and that I wasn't sure if the failed fan had perhaps lead to compressor damage.

He kindly hooked it up to be pressure tested and regassed and low and behold... when engaging the AC, the compressor kicked in and vents blew cold.

While I waited for the fan to arrive, I've tried the AC a couple of times briefly when moving just to check that the system is holding gas and all seems ok.

All I can say is... bring on the heatwave!
