Temp needle moving whilst driving

Noticed driving round today that my temp needle keeps dropping from half down into the lower quarter segment and stays there for a while and then it rises back to half. Does it when I take tight bends usually...

Coolant is topped up and no leaks in V etc...

Has anyone any ideas as to what may be causing this?

This problem is related to a suspect thermostat,search on here it will bring up plenty of information on the subject..

Is it the thermostat inside the coolant pipe or the thermostat housing issue I should be looking at?

I reckon its a stat issue (stat stuck open or partially open) but as the MGR stat is sealed inside the housing you have to replace both if either goes wrong. And a couple of plastic pipes either side of the stat housing as they usually break when dismantling.

Mine was doing that. Replaced the stat housing and the plastic elbow behind it and the gauge is as steady as a steady thing now! About £60 for the pair IIRC, though I was in a hurry and didn't shop around at all.

Tight bends, hmmmmm. Before spending any money Dan, try bleeding the cooling system.

I'd agree with that. The temperature gauge gets its signal from the coolant temperature sensor mounted between the heads. The sensor probe must be fully submerged in coolant to show the correct reading on the gauge. If the gauge needle varies (falls) as you drive, then the probe is not constantly submerged. In other words, there's an air bubble in the cooling system. This may be static or circulating. Since your gauge varies mainly when cornering, I'd say there's a mainly static air lock in the engine and the coolant is 'sloshing' across the engine when you drive around bends. The solution is the bleed the air from the system, either by evacuation or by the method described in Haynes.
