Default Wobbly gear lever on 260

I've just noticed that gearchanges on the 260 are deteriorating. This happened before and the local Vospers main dealer diagnosed a failed gear linkage. Their repair only lasted a few months and it failed again. They attacked the issue a second time and said the heavy duty components they fitted should never fail again. That was about five years ago. I read somewhere that to fix the linkage properly it needed the engine/gearbox to come out and that if this wasn't done, there was a chance of damaging the drive shaft. Vospers told me they did it both times without taking out the engine.
I know that if I keep driving her, the linkage will get so wibbly wobbly I'll be going into fourth when I want second. Any advice from those who've been there before would be most welcome.

For job like that, stick to those that really know what they are doing.

Nick at Austin Garage up in Burton Upon Trent is the only person who touches my 260 now (I would use Dreadnought, but Scotland is further for me!)

trust me, its worth the long drive!

You will only damage the input shaft if the gearbox is removed with the engine in situ, when this happened to me a new clutch sorted the issue.

I feel a trip needs to be planned now things have opened up a little. I'll give Nick a call with my laundry list lol.

I believe it’s a roll pin that breaks and causes a problem, not saying this is what’s happening to yours but it does happen. As mentioned do not try and remove the gearbox on its own. One method I saw a friend use was from inside the car after removing the centre console was to drill the spot welds on the plate above the gearbox and this gave enough room to remove the lid and fix the linkage
