Cleaning your engine bay is actually part of basic maintenance. Dripping and soaking oil can soften and damage rubber components, weaken belts etc. General dirt can cause water to cling to components, corroding and/or shorting electrical contacts. It can encourage rust or genral corrosion not only of the body, but also of bolts and other fixings, making a repair or removal harder later on.

Might sound over the top, but ive seen it all.

By the same token, oil on those same components will prevent them rusting innit...

And.. You cheated, no one said it was a good idea not to fix any leaks.. ..

Method:

Spray whole engine bay with 'Gunk' degreaser. Use soft brush on really dirty parts.

Jet with cold water, but stay away from back of bulkhead (Plenums & ECU), also don't directly spray on to electrical connections etc. Spray until degreaser gone.

Next, spray entire engine bay with 'Auto Glym' Bumper & vinyl clean. Thoroughly spray EVERYTHING under engine bay (NOT BULKHEAD).

It will go all white and milky and look an absolute mess.

Now comes the hard part. Start engine, go for short drive and then park up. DO NOT LOOK UNDER BONNET. Leave car alone preferably next day, and then have a look. If you followed instructions you will be amazed at the result.

One very clean, shiny engine bay, with the black rubber etc, looking very black.

Attached picture should be what you can achieve.

Or this though fully agree with Pab about pressure washers. Ok on old stuff but to much electrics to damage.. Steam cleaner is the best but again with care.. I use waterless cleaner degreaser and a jug if water if any rinsing needed
