Michael Apted
Film and documentary maker, Michael Apted has died. He was probably best known here for the Up! series which followed the lives of a group of children from different backgrounds so as to examine the effect of social class on people's life chances over time, catching up with the protagonists every seven years. The most recent instalment was only broadcast just over a year ago. He was a successful film director too, with Gorillas In The Mist and Nell among his credits, but he described the Up! series as "the most important thing I have ever done".
