instrument cluster mileage stays on

Just had a strange thing happen on the wifes 75.
She switched the car off, took the keys out of the ignition lock but the trip meter and mileage on the instrument cluster remained on.
Switched the car on and off but still stayed on.
Disconnected the battery and reconnected it and cleared the fault but strange fault!!

I've had that once before. Battery reset sorted it as you've found.
