So here it is LVC is the name and logo of the company and the Postcode and BS number are displayed. The manufacturer is also the supplier.

Have to admit it's VERY tiny but don't see a problem. Hopefully!

Cheers Steve,
it is worrying. If you can ask him the relevant questions. Mine seems okay but I await your findings with interest.

The plates with MG Rover Group with postcode B31 2TB that members are buying from 'hardirdden' maybe illegal.

It seems any vehicle registered after 01/09/2001 must have the following information.

1: The name, trademark of the manufacturer or supplier of the number plate.
2: The name and postcode of the supplying outlet of the number plate.
3: The British Standard Number (currently BSAU145d).

Legal plates can only be purchased from registered number plate suppliers (RNPS). This is why the supplier details need to be shown on the plate to confirm its legal and the correct checks have been made by the supplier regarding the owners details & documents, the day when the plate was originally purchased.

You will need to produce at least one document from each of the DVLA lists to allow the number plate supplier (RNPS) to confirm your name, address and your entitlement to the registration number such as the V5C, New keeper’s details section (V5C/2) or a Certificate of Entitlement etc etc.

I've heard many times that the plates being sold on ebay maybe illegal, people are getting stopped and fined on the spot since the new rules have come into force.
Many thanks for the words of caution Westley. This is an interesting one and if, as you suggest, these plates are illegal I will take this up with Ebay and PayPal pronto!!

Thanks Harry for confirming, I also wanted to order a set of plates from 'hardirdden' and I wasn't sure they would conform to the UK regulations etc.

If L.V.C is his companies name and S427LJ is 'hardirdden' company postcode, then this is perfect. A quick google search brings up Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

But, hardirdden registered business sellers name & address on ebay is YOURPLATES, Dublin, Ireland...

There has got to be a simple explanation, I'm sure.

Unofficially speaking and not to be quoted as this is just my opinion as someone that works in the DVLA (not for enforcements or anything like that)

There is definitely a big push since October for legal plates. This is because of the abolition of the tax disc.

ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras fitted to most police cars/vans snap each plate they pass (parked or driving) and checks with the DVLA if its taxed, if not it adds a note for enforcement to chase up payment.

The ANPR camera's main concern is being able to read the number plate efficiently, so the spacing of the number plate, font and size. There is no way (in my opinion) it will be able to tell while passing at 30mph if it has the BSU number
BUT
Even if the plate is all legally spaced in a legal font etc but you bought it from an unregulated seller on eBay, if the ANPR pings up anything at all that the police want to check out (not taxed, not insured, expired MOT, looks unsafe, driver looks high/drunk, any other reason they feel like) then they could well have a quick squint at the plate and see the lack of BSU mark... which could then lead to a fine, so "pays your monies and takes your chances". (It is a nice quick check for them similar to checking tyre tread)

I'm sure there must be legal above board suppliers of the semi circular plates somewhere?
There had better be anyway! I fancy some for when I get a 75

Right, nice one Peter. That all makes sense. My plate bought last week does have the requisite logo postcode and BS number.

It does seem odd though that other plates have different 'signatures'.

Westley, I also did that little exercise and discovered the Irish / Derbyshire oddity

It seems a bit strange but I can't help feeling there will be a good explanation.
Firstly the guy has 46,383 transaction feedback on Ebay, that's a lot of plates sold He appears to specialise in supply of Number Plates and his "Item Location" shown in his listing is indeed Chesterfield, Derbyshire which coincides with the Postcode on my plate.

I went wrong (my fault) by asking him (Ken) to include a Rover badge on my plate, he said to me he could place one on the left and I agreed. I since learned this is illegal
My plan is to stick a Union Flag with GB logo over the Rover badge and this should be then legal.
I plan to then take my car round the corner where there is a garage that does MOT and ask them if it would pass. If so I'll stop worrying

I'll report as to how I get on.

Harry.

Hi Gaz, when was your 51 plate MG registered?
I'm not sure your MG badge to the left would be legal or not.

As you say Harry, I reckon all is ok with 'hardirdden' as long as he is a registered plate supplier, all the Police need to do is check that small postcode.

It bothers me slightly why these ebay sellers have no need to see any of the vehicle and owners documents. Obviously it makes it alot easier for us, also makes it easier for the dishonest criminals to make clones etc (this is partly why the DVLA introduced this new system to combat car cloning etc).
