Fuel gauge all over the place

Often ok frequently reads zero
This morning was zero, then up and down then settles on zero again.
Any clues where to start.

Yeah, others have had the same fault and it's always a diesel. A member who investigated fully found that the wire-wound rheostat forming the sender unit suffers excessive wear over a limited span of its travel. He posted photographs but I can't remember who it was.
