wobble may be a balance problem, the clunk is near certainly a strut bearing

Thanks Kaiser - you know how it is where people post questions regarding problems and by the end of the thread you're none-the-wiser as what the real problem was! I do try to close the loop in these cases - but am embarrassed that it has taken me this long!!!

Is there any other way I can test for a worn strut bearing before biting the bullet, buying the parts and the spring compressors required for their replacement? |

Just to remind everyone :
The diesel belts are due every 90k. I've seen 100's of member's cars with full service history still with original belts on even after 100k miles! Many garages don't bother to change them at the 90k major service The compressor belt starts to split at 70k and the Aux belt still looks good at 100k. Best to change both for piece of mind

Unfortunately Jules the later Rover service sheets had the belts down for an inspection every 15k miles instead of replacement at 90k miles.
As you say change every 90k miles or 6 years for peace of mind. |

Assuming the AC belt splits at 70k and I see them at 120k ready to shred, that means they have slipped through 3 inspections They probably just look at the outside of the main belt round the power steering pulley which usually looks fine. To inspect the AC belt all that is required is to remove ONE fastener on the undertray and peer in at the AC tensioner roller to see the inner belt. Quote:
Feel each front road spring in turn while someone else turns the steering either side of centre. You can narrow it down to which strut bearing is indented. Probably both if you were born unlucky

The clunk is amplified through the spring.
It acts as a speaker! It will be obvious
