Default Young person's car insurance

Hi: my eldest son aged 19 currently drives a late 2006, current shape Vauxhall Corsa 1.2sxi and he is very pleased with it. In November 2014 he will be 20 and wouldy like a ZT CDTi which would not be a problem purchase wise. It would also allow his younger brother to have the Vauxhall around April next year.

The problem appears to be insurance - he passed his test in April 2012 and though he drove my CDTi on my insurance for one year until April 2013, followed by his own insurance for currently one year (but by April 2015 two years), the quotes for insurance are high.

He is a student currently in his first year at university and hence for part of the year the car would be with him.

My question: can anyone recommend an insurer for a student with three years post test experience and two years NCB?

Thanks
Steve

I passed my test just a month after your son, and didn't get my first car until November that year. I have 1 nears NCB and was quoted £1200 for my ZT CDTI by elephant. They were the cheapest for me.

Might be worth a try. Best place is all the price comparison sites. I've got an account on a few of them and just compare prices on there. Then when I find the cheapest one, I go directly to their site and put a quote in directly, and actually got an even cheaper quote once.

It is tough these days finding realistic insurance, gone are the days when you could have a 2l Cortina as your first car at 18 and pay cheap insurance like my uncle did in the early 90's.

I've been with Elephant/Admiral, on and off, since I got a modern car (i.e., my 75). They're consistently cheapest, though Directline insured my ZT for an amazingly good price.
Hope your son finds affordable insurance.

ive been on a young drivers policy with cooperative (black box) for 2 years and theyve been fantastic. When I took the policy out they were 60% cheaper than anywhere else for a fully comp policy. I had reservations on the black box but unless you drive like a complete tool you will have no problems.

Not sure which insurance to recommend - try a comparison site like - go compare. com.

Here's a tip you may already know....... Get yourself added as a named driver on his insurance and for some strange reason the premium will be significantly cheaper. I did this with my daughter's insurance and it came in at £800. Previously quoted £1450 without me and the wife as additional drivers

Give it a try!

Best for me was General Accident, same people as Aviva. But again they were found through a comparison site.

I was £1000 for a year fully comp on my 2.5 V6 and i'm 19 with a claim on my policy and no NCB. I think the only problem you may have is it has a MG badge on the front rather than saying Rover. We know the cars are the same but insurance doesn't.

Also post-code makes a big difference. My friend with the same car down south pays around the same, but he is a bit older with a few years NCB.

try going direct to the few specialists who don't appear in comparison sites...

Sky Insurance
Chris Knott
Adrian Flux (although their prices have gone up lately i think)
Direct Line
Churchill

To name just a few...

I went direct to Churchill for my ZT and they worked out nearly £200 cheaper than my cheapest quote from the Meerkats ! I currently pay around £600 a year (23 Years old, 5 years NCB & a clean license with mods declared)

It will be cheaper if you go on as a named driver.. It may be worth getting a quote with a black box and crash cam fitted

Be careful though. If you are found to be 'Fronting' if and when you make a claim, your insurance will be null and void. it is also, technically, fraud and you could potentially be prosecuted too.
