For years the song 'everything I own' as sung by the band Bread was just another song. I never listened to the words.
Then one day I was listening to the radio whilst driving and the song was discussed and it was written by David Gates as a tribute to his late father. At his fathers funeral, his uncle told him that although he hadn't seen his father for a while due to touring with the band, his father had said that he was very proud of him.

I carried on driving and they played the song and I listened to every word. I stopped at the next layby and sobbed. A few weeks earlier I'd lost my grandfather who I was very close to and miss every day.

'' I would give everything I own just to see you once again''

Nearly two years on I still can't listen to the song .

Only Tender Love .

By the Scottish band Deacon Blue.

Anyone who ever lost a long time love only to be saved by a long lost lover ( as I was ) will get the lyrics .

Also a great track.

At our good friend Tam Leeks funeral he was sent off with his fav song Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd .

Never seen so many tears at a funeral and most of them were mine .

He is fixing cars in heaven .

As for "songs that hurt", there are far too many, and they are far too painfull innit...

Various songs strike various emotional responses with me, but the one that always bring a lump to my throat is, The British Soldier, by Harvey Andrews. Based on an actual event, where Sergeant Michael WILLETTS GC, shielded others using his body, after a bomb was thrown into a police station he was in.

'Cascada, Every time we touch' always seems to make me stop and reflect for some reason.

Your first link, Brian, is a song I remember my late best mate Kenny with R.I.P.

My mam had that song played at my dad's funeral so it has sad memories for me too.
