Been there and have the T shirt to prove it. I'd say it's the thermostat that's opening late or not enough. An incorrectly timed belt can retard the timing making the engine run hot, you would feel a drop in power, have very clean plugs with erosion on the tips and a marked drop in fuel consumption as well.
