Default Fuel Pump costs

Firstly I am sorry if this has been sent before but I cant find it on the forum.
so he is is again.
I have just got a bill from my garage for over £600 for 2 fuel pumps for my Rover 75T petrol estate Mileage 100464..can this be right Pump 1 £282.98 and pump 2 £363.54.

The car broken down and was towed to the garage.I have dealt with this garage for many years however this was the first time they have seen this car. I am worried now I have been ripped off or is this the sort of money to for this repair. I did not expect such a high price.

Can some one explain the fuel set up for these cars do they have twin tanks or reserve tank I dont have a workshop manual so cant find out.

I have not seen the mechanic that worked on the car so I need some advise before I see him or pay the bill.

Thanks.

Do you have a breakdown of the bill I.E part's and labour cost's? Does seem a little steep as the O.E.M under bonnet pump is circa £150.00 to buy and can be fitted in around half an hour. I'm not sure about the in tank pump cost but it is much more work. Either way Ouch!
Lee.

Bill; I am sorry to tell you that you have been shafted. First of all, petrol cars have only one fuel pump. Some diesels have two.
Secondly, on the petrol engined cars fuel pump failure is very rare.

What were the symptoms of your breakdown? Maybe we can help diagnose your problem properly (and free of charge too)? If it's fuel related it's most likely to be a loose fuel filter cannister.

Bill; please consult the forum before you instruct garages.

Simon

Sounds like they have taken advantage. I would be going back and demanding a refund and explanation and maybe even report them. Hope you get it resolved.

I suspect the garage have replaced the in-tank pump and the filter module, believing the latter to be a second pump.

If the prices for the two items include labour and genuine OEM parts were used then IMO they feel about right.

Of course the garage's diagnosis was probably incorrect and most likely at least one of the two items did not need to be replaced. But most non-expert garages are unlikely to understand the details of the fuel system operation on our cars, so their course of action does not seem unreasonable if the car was suffering fuel supply/pressure related systems.

What were the sysmptoms and have they been resolved with the change of the modules?

Default Fuel problems

Thanks guys for all you help as explained I got the car back with an invoice so I have not seen the garage yet to pay. I intend to go next week but I wanted some back up from you all. The problem I have with this garage is that I trusted them to repair the car and I dont want to think I have been ripped off. They have worked on all my cars for over 15 years with no problems and good rates. In their defense they are not a Rover specialist and had the car for some days trying to Analise the fault.
The new pump in the tank the price is right £282.98 from Siemens.I have checked but I cant understand the second pump £363.54 and on top of this I have a labor charge of £100.00.

I will post the outcome when I see them. Watch this space.

thanks
Bill

It possible you have fuel filter separation. This is an £8 fix. The clip is available from ebay and about 1 hours labour at most. Ive just had the same problem and ixed it myself with the assistance of information from tbis forum but as people have already said garages want to fit new pumps and filters resulting in big bills for the customers.

Yep agree with everyone else, you have been ripped off (not the first) it will be the ffs which is a very cheap repair. I have just bought a car that had a receipt for nearly £600 for a new fuel pump and filter assembly! The garage was probably unaware of the fault and "just" changed pump first then filter.
