Default Rover 75 coni estate::::Help

Hi Guys....I have just had a really bad time with my rover this morning. I have not used it for 2 days and I know its very cold...But on starting it and trying to drive away there was a really bad knocking and crunching sound coming from the front offside wheel area....I just managed to drive to to my mechanic about 3 miles away..but on the way there was lots of smoke and smells of rubber coming from the wheel area...I thought that the brakes has seized on..but does not think so.He did not know unitl he looks at it.

Up to now the car has been perfect

Any ideas what could be the problem

Broken front spring. Have a look at the top of the front wheel and you should see a bit of spring hitting the tyre.

That could be a good diagnostic...It certainly smelt of rubber and the steering was hard....

Is it expensive repair.

Frosty weather brings the spring fracture season. It happens annually, typically just as the car takes up the drive. Yours is textbook.

When I had a fractured front coil replaced on my saloon, it was 90 pounds fitted. And a new tyre would be 60-150 pounds depending on your preferred make and model.

I don't know what others think, but you may want to consider replacing the coil spring on both sides if that is the cause. I'm assuming (maybe wrongly??) that the other side may be in a similar condition and prone to failure.

Just like to add make sure that whilst the strut is apart to change the spring that the top bearing is checked and replaced if necessary, and at the very least re-lubricated which can only be done while it's dismantled. Same goes for other side if you do the pair (which you really should to ensure matched springs).

I would just like to echo the sentiments of the posters who recommend replacing springs in pairs. In addition I would also fit Spring Protectors . Mine cost about £15 from memory and I have them fitted to my Rover 75 and MG ZTT.

There are threads on here re spring protectors so it is well documented

whi;e they are doing it do both sides .. also front drop links which are a pig to do in situe and are much easier with the suspension leg out

they arent that expensive
but do get good ones most cheaper replacements will fail after no time at all
