Rover 75 T estate 2003 Back exhaust box problem
Hi Guys..I have not been on here for a while so I hope every body is happy out there in Rover land. Here a couple of questions if you can help me today.
I am driving to Germany in a couple of weeks but I have noticed the bafflers in the back exhuast box is rattling...so I took it to my local Kwik Fit centre they told me that the join on the pipe that connects to the back box is rusting away and could eventually break off. There is no exhaust leaks at this time. and it has a new MOT. Two questions: I was unable to see because the jobs worth at Kwik Fit would not let me inspect it. What would happen if it breaks off on my trip would the pipe fall to the floor or could it in an emergency hang there and get me home. I could not see if there are any brackets holding it up. I need to replace the back box at some stage anyway. hopefully when I get back. Any exhaust centres you can recommend in the London Middlesex area....As I dont trust Kwik Fit they said they need to get special order parts. Thanks Bill |

On the tourer there is only one box at the rear with a long pipe all the way up to the cat. (at least on a diesel) If you can hear it rattle then it rattles, if kwikfit say it's a death trap then it's good for another few years. I can't recommend anyone in your area but avoid all the chain\franchise businesses to get an honest opinion.

There is an intermediate box half way back to the engine on a KV6 petrol Tourer. If the pipe breaks from the back box, it will make more noise and may also bump about, but nothing should fall off, unless the mounts/mount frame is also shot. Rimmers do not seem to have back box - NLA.
Anyone found a supplier of good quality replacements? Must be quiet. |

Probably for the longer term when you come to replace your back box look up Walker Tennaco, they have a help desk in Birmingham (can't help more I'm abroad a t mo with limited net access).
I thought that I was going to have to replace the back box on my 03 saloon and my local motor factors stocked Walkers which I had never heard of and they suggested I look them up. They seem to be quite well made and they offer a 3 year guarantee which says something. My back box wasn't rattling but had a small hole where the pipe from the front enters and I made a plate out of thin sheet metal, cleaned up the box and used JB Weld to fix it to the box and fill any gaps, I have done one return and one one way trip to the Algarve and its still looking good. Hope this helps.

I've sent you a PM for someone that I use, as a customer.
Kwikfit have proved so many times that they are in the business to make money, that's logical, but they don't appear to have any concern for the customer. I used to say they were only good for exhausts, but that attitude is totally wrong. |

Having just replaced the back box on my V6 saloon, any rattle I was getting was the loose heat shield above it. Secured with 2 penny washers there is no more rattle. Try checking your heat shield just in case.

Avoid KWIKFIT at ALL COSTS. I can't even talk about my experience with them without risking a stroke.

Some years ago I was forced to use a pattern part silencer on a Company provided Rover, it was awful, noisy and affected the cars performance. After much shouting at the Fleet Car supplier, they authorised the use of a Rover part, all troubles were solved, quiet again!!

Having been under the beast again this morning I have reshaped and refitted the baffle type plate above the centre section, and have now ordered a rear section from Mr. Auto, at just under £60, similar pattern to the original.
Hopefully when that arrives, it'll only take an hour to change, including sawing the old clamp off which looks rusted totally to the pipe. |
