Some very good advice here, you'd do well to follow each suggestion through in order to find the root of the problem. I'd also add one possibility, which is that the expansion tank cap may not be sealing optimally - coolant could escape from here and be virtually undetectable.

Having said which, I have to agree with others above that the garage you took it to has replaced many components - presumably at some considerable expense - and yet the problem persists. The problem you took it to garage for in the first place, right?

I appreciate that it's often difficult to pursue this kind of thing; but a good, honourable mechanic will want to see the problem resolved correctly just as you do.

Default Water Leak

Hi Guys I am still putting in half a bottle of water in every 2/3 days..I cant see any leaks on the pipes and no wet carpet..Its had a new head gasket and radiator..

There is an overflow pipe from the expansion bottles but its connected to another pipe that goes around the engine.. can you explain if it overflows maybe with airlock or pressure so it losing water through this pipe. but it drains back into the coolant system... I dont understand dot com.

Default Water Leak

I have had the water leak for months before it went into the garage for the head gasket I thought great with the new head gasket new radiator new matrix it will solve the problem but no still the same every other day I top up with water at least half a bottle...
I go on long motor way journeys it does not over heat but you can be sure when I get back...yes more water to put in.

I have heard about coloured water like antifreeze to find where it leaks any thoughts on this

Don't write off a suspect inlet manifold gasket leak just because you can't see or feel any moisture around the inlet manifold.

It is quite possible that coolant is leaking into one (or more) of the cylinders due to a leak and is therefore not visible to you.

When you first fire up the engine from cold does it run a little rough for a brief moment? That's usually a good sign of the above.

Did the garage the replace the IMG when they did your head gasket?
If so, the inlet manifold is plastic and subject to extreme heat so entirely feasible, as suggested by Lovel, that it could be warped.

I'd use food colouring of a glaringly bright colour.

There is a special kind of tracer fluid intended for that very purpose. Lights up like a hi-vis jacket when you shine a UV light on it. Ask your local rad maker or search the net for UV tracer fluid coolant or something similar.

Hi Bill,

If the garage didn't refill and bleed your cooling system according to the MG Rover procedure (and I'd bet that they didn't), then that's all that should be necessary. You can do it yourself.

As above. Just unhook the header tank, and slightly loosen the bleed screw in the small pipe. When you have unhooked the header tank, raise it up as far as it will go, and then slowly pour water into it. Look for air bubbles coming out of the bleed screw. When/ if bubbles start to come out, let in run until there are no bubbles coming out. Tighten the bleed screw up(only wants nipping up). Re attach the header tank in its place. Then take it for a drive. When you come back check to see if any water has disappeared.
