Default Tail light cluster ZTT.

190 ZTT just failed her MOT last Friday on front anti-roll bar bushes and rear indicator lights the wrong colour. I rebooked for today thinking I'd be sorted, but the garage hit a snag with getting off the rear tourer light clusters. So I took it back and found the two inner retaining screws just rotating. I managed to remove the nearside by accident 'cos it just popped out when I was examining it. Found both plastic lugs damaged and the previous mechanic had cleverly hooked the broken ends under the retaining screw heads which had kept the light cluster secure since last worked on. Unfortunately, this also allowed some water to leak from the tailgate gutter through the small gaps around the screws and into the carpet well on the interior, so I'd like to fix it properly. I popped off the interior trim to find no access to the rotating captive nuts from the inside. I'm guessing I may have to just grind the whole lot out to do it properly. Think I'll change the faded bulbs, hopefully claim the free MOT re-test tomorrow and then scour the forum later. Will have to post some pics from 'Tapatalk' since Windows seems to have stopped downloading my photos from iPhone.

Excellent information (as usual). I looked at the rotating fixings and thought they did look like rivnuts. I could use a larger size but I'm inclined to use a rawlplug too. Plenty to be going on with. I'll post what I get up to in due course. Many thanks again for taking the time to post Arctic.

I read all of Arctic’s thread which was very helpful. Got a pack of 50mm galvanised brackets from Screwfix (since my computer had no spare metal bits)
Then proceeded to carefully bend and shape four pieces bedded for the two tail lights since all the plastic fittings were broken
Note small s/s bolt on my first attempt.
Then poured in hot glue to fully secure after making sure the holes were aligned
Final result
Similar for the smaller bottom brackets.

Still getting used to Tapatalk. This is the pic of the offside tail light ready to go in with another s/s bolt modified to replace the missing ball stud.

Hi Martin.
I used the same brackets later on down the line, i bought mine when Aldi had some for sale.

1

2

I saw into the corner so they can be bent to the right angle for fitting & matching up to the fixing hole on the body.

3

I still stuck them on with araldite rapid, and filled in with black silicone after.

As mentioned in the PM i used the fixings from the sound proofing on the bulk head with stainless steel screws, that way if i have to change a bulb in the future it will be easy no corroded bolts spinning etc.

good luck with the rest of the work

Turned my attention to the spinning rivnuts.
This picture is of the final solution I dreamed up. Have run out of time and patience with Tapatalk, so will post exact details and photos hopefully tomorrow night.

Not the final photo. That is an M10 rivnut which I placed in the oversize hole after cleaning with alcohol and applying Black Rustoleum liberally before compressing. I put hot melt glue into the rivnut and then drilled through it centrally after it set. Then a s/s self tapper. Photos to follow tomorrow.

Thanks Arctic. I have to say your work is inspirational ( and definitely neater than mine.) I'm going to have to raise my game.
