I’m in favour of a pay rise for NHS staff, not just nurses but including those that wash the floors.
Maybe 5p a litre on fuel or a couple of pence increases in income tax could fund this.

A good point Steve but how about cutting out wasteful expenditure instead? "Smart" motorways are anything but and do we really need HS2?

I Was a NHS Charge Nurse when I retired as planned at 55, after 35 years service, almost 10 years ago. Reckon I worked in about every field of nursing care, apart from children's nursing. I have experienced many things, and seen many changes, worked at 5 hospitals that closed down many moons ago.

I cannot recall ever feeling like I did not want to go to work, apart for the last 6 months or so, I cannot recall feeling like I wanted to go to work.

My career plan to retire at 55 and sticking to it. Priceless.

The Public Accounts Committee said that Track and Trace had made 'no clear impact' in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lets look at some numbers.
Entire UK Primary Care budget - £9 Billion
Entire UK Police Budget - £15 Billion
Entire UK Fire Service Budget - £3 Billion
Cost of 5% pay rise for NHS nurses - £500 million
Money handed out to Test and Trace - £37 Billion.

Think I know where the money would have been better spent

Curiously, there is so far not much fuss about the £37 Billion, tempted to type that again just for effect, along with other incredible sums, by the vocal supporters of the profligacy and gross mismanagement by our elders and betters.

The power to throw such sums away with apparent abandon is in no way balanced by the complete absence of responsibility and penalties for such disregard for our taxes. Has anyone been demoted? Moved to 'other duties'? Fired? No chance.

Unless I've got the wrong end of the stick (quite possible ) most costs have been for "consultants" some on £6K a DAY . I'd take an educated guess that the folks on the front line are not far off the minimum wage.

Having been working in a Govt Dept when consultants were "called in" they were about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Totally out of touch with reality with all sorts of pie in the sky ideas that were totally unworkable.

Having said that £37 Billion is a ridiculous sum of money. I wonder which companies have made lots and lots of money from this And I wonder if there might, possibly, be any sort of connection between them and whoever made the decision(s)to "employ" them.

The NHS workers I speak too on a daily basis are fed up with being treated like the scrapings off a shoe.
They are not consultants or similar but the women and men who keep the hospital running. Many of them are on Scottish living wage but it's not enough. Hours have increased, workload have increased and that's about it.
They enjoyed the clapping although it came as a shock when supermarkets and utility companies won't accept clapping as a form of payment.

The governments ( in all parts of the UK) have made a choice. They have chosen to give the NHS workers a cut in real terms. They could have chosen not too do so but they did.

I realise my comments may not be popular, but some of the conversations I have had with hospital porters, cleaners, domestics, cooks and so on have been heartbreaking

I would guess that as at the time we had not had a crises for many moons he was of the opinion that I was writing out of my posterior. However, even in every day administration of state sponsored services and quangos they looked light weight. This pandemic has proved it and the "consultancy" firms they have outsourced their responsibilities to have failed equally.

Beggars belief both private and state are fallible. Perhaps our lower education standards since the 70's has/is having the desired impact (no - lets not have debate yet again on that).

Just had my council tax bill 2021/22: some of the rises as follows:

Police 6.0%, Town Council 4.8%, County Council 3.9%, Fire Brigade 2.0%

NHS staff deserve a proper rise

We should ring-fence some of the weekly £350m savings, from our new trading arrangements, to fund a decent NHS Pay rise.
