What I have just noticed though, and I have never noticed before, with the car at idle, when I press turn the aircon on and off via the OFF button, the engine labours slightly for a spit second as if it's trying to run the compressor.

It is a 2 speed fan, with the gold resister in place.

No the control box hasn't been touched.
I tested the fan via the demist button on the doner car, and it worked, so I unplugged it, and moved it to my car.

They were parked next to each other, so we stripped both vehicles, and then swapped the fans.
Hi Marc.
The fan you originally took of your car was that a two 2 speed with resistor also? if yes then maybe it was only the resistor hat had failed.

I see you say you fitted one with gold resistor from the donor car which worked before removing, double check the connecting plugs in the wheel arc, then try demist, all A/C off ignition to II then press demist only.

if the fan does not work then try swapping the relays from your original to the one on now. It could be the board ? again try swapping them over.

Hi Arctic, thanks for the reply.

The original fan had a silver resister, which I swapped to a gold one a few weeks back.
Now that fan is off, I can clearly see the motor is NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-, the casing has swollen and is covered in rust.

I will take the bumper off again and double check the connector plugs.
Without taking the whole front off, could I run a live wire to a connector pin to test the fan again that way?

You did do this after activating the air conditioning with the windscreen demist button didn't you Marc? It would be very unusual for a previously working fan system to fail on both speeds once installed in your car.

Do you have a multimeter? That is the best way to trace the problem. I don't recommend using lengths of wire unless safely terminated in miniature crocodile clips.

I did yes Simon.

This is my thinking also, for the fan to become faulty in the 10 minutes it travelled 15foot between vehicles... I can't see it myself.

So are you taking the bumper off today and do you have a multimeter?

Nope.

I am about to take a wander to the quarry in Brixham and spend the afternoon fishing.

The car has annoyed me!

Tomorrow I'll have another look, and yes I'll dig out my multimeter.
