Fuel range, fuel gauge

Today my diesel showed 12 miles to go - the lowest to calamity I've ever gone - but when I filled her up - and was expecting to get around 63l in, it stopped at 57.75l. While this is comforting in that should I find myself crossing the Sahara, or more likely stuck in an M25 jam for hours, when so much else on this lovely motor is tickety boo, I wonder Rover didn't try and make it more accurate.

I think it allows for a 'Reserve' in the fuel tank, for just such an event as being stuck in a traffic jam or lost in a new place to allow you to find a pertrol station.

I find my V6 does this too. I've gone right down to 3-4 miles remaining before now, and 'filled up' with just about 60 litres.

The 75's tank holds 65 litres, so you putting in nearly 58 litres means you had just over a gallon left. in a Derv at 40~ MPG that would have given you 30 miles after the gauge hity empty/0 Miles.

If the car literally stopped on 0 miles, that would be a little terrifying i think It allows for some environmental factors.

I never understand why people run their car to such a low level, fuel wise. Never thought that it might pick up some rubbish from the bottom of the tank. Fine powdery bits that get through the filter?
