Default Genuine question for the 160bhp gurus

Hi I hope this is ok to write. If not please delete.

Having been out in some 115bhp diesels and quite frankly thinking they were dangerous.

Then going out in some 160bhp upgraded cars. I found the performance adequate.

Is 160bhp the top whack for these engines in rover tune or is there more to come?

This is a genuine question as I really respect the people that make these things happen to our cars.

I have not got a diesel but am curious.

Thanks in advance Thomas

Others with more knowledge will be along shortly, but I'm sure I read that it was developed to the designed limits of the engine. While I've read of higher maps in existence they are probably pushing the engine beyond its limits and are not advisable if you value your engine.

I hope there is a fairly inexpensive way to obtain more power from the cdt however I doubt there is. Surely if there was it would be common knowledge and many members would have followed that route. I'm sure there are folks that have thrown money at the car and fitted performance parts etc but I wonder how much real world gain they could obtain without making the car brittle and spending a fortune!

I was always of the understanding it's because it has a cast crank rather than a forged one (as in the similar BMW engine) so the torque of the 160 map is about the safe limit but I have been wrong before

It is a shame, I've had the 160 map for 2 years now and while it's an extremely worthwhile addition I've never thought it made it a 'fast' car - don't get me wrong you can more than keep up with traffic with it but a little bit more would be nice..... but wouldn't it always

Not a guru but feel that any higher than 160 would have probably defeated it's purpose. Firstly, it's been tested as 'safe' regarding engine component protection, and secondly, it maintains the main reason people buy diesels..fuel economy. Certainly bhp can be, and is, pushed higher, but there's a compromise.

More power than standard is always available if you are willing to accept the risks that come with.

160 is defo a worth while upgrade but defo not fast. Don't think there's much between the 160 and 135. More noticeable from the 115.

I believe there is an upper limit to how much torque our gearboxes can handle so I don't think it is so much of a question is the M47R can handle the extra power it is can the transmission handle it! I've heard on the BMW forums of M47's being tuned to 180BHP, when I spoke to phil t4 (don't quote him on it, it was passing conversation) he said it couldn't be done because of transmission issues related to our cars (or to my auto box anyway). I think 160BHP is enough anyway as its enough to overtake and I will say its really good when you do 30-120mph. Also our fuel economy has gone up s well and believe if 170-180 i obtainable it would just hurt economy with no real noticeable power difference!

I find the 160 upgrade great for my needs but certainly agree that the 115 engine is wholly inadequate, I am staggered to think that BMW could have considered such a derated power unit in such a wonderfull car.
