Default CDTi auto - some form of limp mode ??

Just returning from breakfast at a local Toby, and after some 3 miles (whilst still 2 miles from home) turning right on a hill - suddenly limited to about 8 - 10 mph.

When road levelled out, this increased to say 15 mph; on a down hill section got up to about 30 mph.

Car is auto, but holding in 2,3 or 4 made no difference.

Did get home, and once parked up, engine would rev freely to 3k, and sure it would have gone further.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Regards

Mike

Richard.
I would say the MAF is at fault, unplug it and see if it changes the limp mode.

You will have to remove the air filter cover to unplug the MAF, unless you have the mod in the link below.
https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=307029

It may worth doing the access mod above when you have the air filter cover off.

Check and clean the LP pressure sensor plug connections - it's the one on top of the fuel filter inboard of the battery.

Thanks for that,
I'll get onto it later today, and update thread.

I did read about your mod, and made a mental note to do it.
Seem to recall mention of 5 point star driver with security hole in centre.
If i'm right, then I do have a set, from a job I did some years ago.

Thanks again

Mike

Worth giving the manifold pressure sensor a clean

Many thanks to all responders.

It certainly does look like the MAF; it's now still in situ, but unplugged. Car seems fine on a quick burst up the road, and a replacement will be ordered from DMGR, with a 2 yr. warranty.

Ref. undriveable with duff MAF, yes, agreed.
I limped home yesterday, on a warm / hot engine.
This morning, engine cold, engine started OK, but stalled as soon as R or D was selected.

Other suggestions will be carried out, as precautionary, but I always try and only change one thing at a time. Good practise, from my engineering days.

Again, thanks for help.

Regards

Mike

Pleased to report that new MAF arrived this morning, fitted after lunch and just done a 3 mile test AOK, other than Engine Management Light still on.

I have actually used the car, with MAF unplugged; just local, about 8-10 miles. No apparent issues, other than EML on.

I'm not sure if it will reset itself, in time, or if I need to have it done / buy a code reader and do it myself.

Car still new to me, and towing bracket going on this weekend. This will be my old saloon one from company car in 2000, with hole re-alignment on each fore and aft bracket.

Other tips / recommendations to be carried out at the same time. Arctic's mod was done whilst air filter cover was off.

Thanks for help,

Regards

Mike

HI Mike.
Did EML light come on after unplugging the MAF, if not then you could try unplugging the low pressure connector on the fuel pump squirt it with contact cleaner push it on and off a few times and see if the EML goes out
