Default Thread Closure

Isn’t it about time the calls for threads containing political opinions (with a small ‘P) to be closed to be themselves seen as political?

Most of those calls for censure or closure are from dissenters of one particular opinion or another so could be seen as inherently political masquerading as would-be judges!

There are absolutely no contributors on here who are not adult. All are honourable and surely capable of the required degree of maturity. If the definition of Political is ‘anything any individual says is political, then that’s the daily revised version’, we might as well metaphorically all go home.

Thread closure, other than obviously deliberate trouble making or worse, defamatory or derogatory personal attacks on another, is surely a mark of failure. Oh, and respect is a two way street!

If a thread becomes heated, and we all have red blood , then judicious moderation by managed editing, with the intent and extent of any edit being discussed by pm with the contributor, could be a pre-emptive measure. This would allow ‘self-editing with advice’ and would be infinitely preferable to the blunt, and incredibly rude, closure.

All of this fuss because of one and usually singular temporary bad mood of one contributor. The whole of human life is, in one way or another, intensely political and the Andy Pandy approach rather childish. All in the best possible taste, of course.

Same could be said for religious threads.

Alas some posts can be offensive and there is no apology, perhaps just more aggression or rudeness and so to prevent any upset and ill feeling, the threads are avoided.

I'd like to see threads run but I don't want to see rudeness or aggression and if brought to ones attention, then I'd like to see an apology.

We the members are responsible perhaps for threads being closed by the posts we make. May be the mods would let political or religious threads run if every post was polite.

Ray I agree and I'll vote for that but I dont think it will be accepted, our society has embraced censorship like a ------------ ( fill in your choice of example). Chris S.

I take your point Christopher but, with the average age of members, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to nippers and ankle biters on here, I would have thought there would be a degree of maturity within these walls.

It's not difficult to redefine a problem area so that discussion can be maintained at reasonable levels.

Perhaps what is wanted is a narrower prospectus that might be attractive to the majority. Even so, if people don't like what they are reading, the easiest thing to do is to stop reading! It's not a majority that object either, just one or two. I'm not criticising those that do, just that the rule is wide open to being charged through, along with a wagon and horses.

When a thread of national concern reaches 800 posts and one, two, or three of them are mildly objectionable, it's obviously of considerable genuine interest especially as circumstances change so swiftly and widely.

It's not politics, it's glaringly obvious it is Health. Those that misuse the opportunity should be the only casualties, not the genuinely interested.

In spite of all that, the problem still lies in the loose wording and interpretation of a certain rule. I wonder if anyone has bothered to count the number of closure requests related to that rule compared with every other rule? That should indicate there is something needing addressing!

We are blessed with good moderators, I think maybe their hands are just a bit tightly tied as a result of indifferent rule wording.

So, one counter argument from an authoritative source (p.878) now amounts to a warrant for descent into a banned area? When there have been hundreds of ‘pro’ controversial posits?

Come on Clive, surely you can see how that looks! Censorship demanded at the introduction of valid professional opinion! That’s no way for friends to behave! The guilty posts you highlight do indeed need a critical eye but moderation has, in a curious way, a wider sense.

Further, I for one did not even hint that a removal of a post should occur. Certainly not me! You might re-read that suggestion and realise at least that I was suggesting a pm’d advice of reasons for a partial edit! You seem to be looking for the fabled Red under the bed!

Then you allege a ‘pointed finger’ at a Mod for ’selective bias’? How very dare you! I at least did not, I even supported mods! Let me reiterate: I sympathise with them in their onerous duties! It's the Rules!

Open comment is a good thing Clive, but in everyone’s interest let’s not fog the issue with a lack of focus. That indeed is exactly what we are trying to prevent! All that’s needed following a transgression is subtlety, the Damocles option always fails.

My late Grandfather who was born in 1923 , always told me never to argue over politics and religion. I think his meaning was no side would ever agree!

One funny situation I remember , I was having a cup of tea with him and my Nanna , who was born in Barrow in Furness in 1922 and was a proper old socialist ,had been busy upstairs and came down shouting Stan , you haven't sent off your postal vote ! He said Ada , I don't know who to vote for so I just might vote Conservative . He needed his tin hat that day when she called him a turncoat !

There's nowt wrong with being committed to a cause. Nor in the blind faith of long held tradition. My allegiances have changed three times in my life - in response to changing times and conditions. It's a fact I was for a time a Trades Union official! Most important thing for me is an open mind, to see both sides gives some sort of balance. My parents would disown me if they could see me now! Well, they probably would anyway.

A Mod, a Mod, A mod, A mod that's what I want to be.
From the time I first discovered them they've fascinated me.

They pick you up, they put you down, they tell you this and that,
But when you try to answer back they have you on the mat.

This rod of power placed in my hand, that is what I want,
To say you can't say that in here, right now, you're banned you c--t ( Clot )

I've hinted, squinted even ranted to try and get my way,
I've got the look but not the badge, but maybe one fine day

You admin guys, give me a chance to show just how I'm made,
You'll not look back cos I will always call a spade a spade.

So if you come down on my side I'll promise not tell,
Sit back, enjoy a laugh, while I give those posters hell.

One of the great personal attributes is the ability to reflect and then potentially change one's opinion based on the reason supplied by others. It's too easy to become tribal. My own political allegiance is always changing. I lean to conservatism but note good points made by members of all parties. The current Covid situation is a poisoned chalice for anyone trying to 'do the right thing'. We all benefit by being kind to those we disagree with and I'm always happy to be enlightened. I do feel there is so much money, politics and ego invested in the discourse on Covid that the truth is elusive.
