Default Accident waiting to happen?

Last week I spoke to a lady as I was seriously concerned about the state of her cars rear discs and pads. She told me it had been an advisory on the MOT a few months earlier. She is still running around with the same discs and pads.

Is she an accident waiting to happen due to brake failure? I dont know but it is scary how bad they look and despite having been told twice, seems to have done nothing about it or her husband has done nothing about it.

They must have been pretty poor judging by your description: sad that it was only considered an advisory on the test.

This is just another example of the current culture that cars are simply white goods to be used and thrown away.

They don't need to be "looked after" - that's what the garage does once a year - maybe.

They're obviously not big, heavy, incredibly complex beasties which can easily kill or maim.

And, of course, it's ALWAYS someone else's fault.

When I was an MOT tester many years ago, I was told that as long as the brakes met the efficiency in the brake rollers, any corrosion on the discs was only an advisory.
Obviously if the discs were cracked or very badly distorted or whatever, they would fail.
And pads had to be below a certain thickness to fail, which can be difficult to measure.
I'm unsure what the criteria is these days but I don't think it has changed much.

The MOT tester I use has some real horror stories about the state of some of the vehicles he tests.

He recently had a car that he was going to fail on dozens of points and all were in his view very dangerous, the first thing the owner asked was there any chance could they just be advised on instead and he would get them done and when he said no way the owner said he would get an MOT somewhere else as he needed the car for work on Monday and it cant be that bad.

In his view the recent MOT extension has done nothing but make the standard of vehicles even worse, he reckons he has failed more vehicles than ever recently.

I assume that would have been a pre-test check then as once the car is logged on to the computer system that's it, the faults would have to be registered online & he wouldn't be able to get a pass anywhere until the faults were sorted.

or until the mot tester "has a speck of dirt in his eye and does not see the fault"
