2.5l Driveshaft Joint - Page 2

The first three pics show the nasty surprise on dissembling the driveshaft that one of the ball/rollers complete with needle rollers is completely missing from the bearing. (No, its not on the garage floor! But maybe at the garage where the earlier MOT repairs were carried out ("... removed and stripped offside front assembly...").
All this surely the cause of the drivetrain vibration that had suddenly become an issue when driving at over 60mph.

The other three pics show comparison of the removed driveshaft92.5l KV6 manual) and one fo ra 1.8 Auto. Close in some respects but not an exact match.

The search for a replacement continues, if anyone can help please let me know.

Hello peeps it’s been a while. Hope all well? The concensus appears to be that the casting number dictates the driveshaft type. Ian’s (KV6 manual box)has #16 cast into it on the bearing housing two mounting holes. If this numbering corresponds correctly that would equate to bearing casting with #8 as a 1.8 manual NASP and #9 as a 1.8 Auto NASP. Three mounting holes for 1.8

Just as a final postscript and completeness to this thread: (which was similar to another thread I started at approx. the same time rather misleadingly entitled by me as "Lumpy/engine misfiring" as it wasn't misfiring at all but a (bad) vibration at higher speeds all to do with (after a bit of investigating, red herrings and false avenues) driveshaft and in particular trilobe nearing or tripod(e) hub.

a big shout out thank you to Gary Rogers (aka Lovel) who was the wise engineer who properly inspected and realised that the vehicle vibration problem was from the driveshaft. And then discovered that the tripode joint at the end of the driveshaft was missing its outer ring and the roller bearings for it were not there!! (And not mashed up inside the bearing casing and not fallen onto Gary's garage floor!).

Whilst he and I soon found out that there are different driveshafts for 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5, diesel and petrol and also automatic and manual and that Rimmers do not have all variants, the problem was fully solved by Gary sourcing and fitting an identical sized trilobe bearing (also called tripode joint).

A great and satisfying end to a worrying and fraught set of circumstances.
