Default Motorbike question

Hi,
Had a good week with the R75, sailed through the MOT, with a couple of quick fix advisories.
Was hoping to finally get my Triumph T140e (1979) up and running and MOTd this week. Sadly the new coils have made the bike a bit easier to start, but it still runs like a bag of spanners, and now smokes from one side.
Does anyone know of someone with knowledge of these types of bikes, who would be able either give me some pointers, or even take a look?
I live in the Bexley area of Kent.
I would of course sort them out for there time, which is one thing I am short on at the moment due to work etc, etc.
The bike has had the carbs cleaned and some parts on them replaced, new battery, coils, plugs and leads.
The head/engine is all original and has only covered 8K, But last started in 1994!.
Thanks
Paul

Possibly gummed up piston rings/hardened valve stem oil seals.

One thing I had when doing up an old Commando was I replaced the float bowl gaskets but it ran very rich. A guy at work advised me to trim about 1mm off the inside edge of the new gaskets as they can expand when first fitted and actually prevent the float going fully up. He was right enough, cured the problem.

I will be checking the carbs again, thanks.
I fitted new stayup floats, and checked the height, all seemed ok, but will look at the gaskets and recheck the floats.
Thanks

It does appear that a lot of parts have perished, so that is a good point.
Didnt really want to remove the head, but that is looking likely.
Thanks

My thought too - an engine left that long will need a fair bit of tlc - but wow!! I wish I had such a great problem to deal with.

Green with envy I am .....

Kev
It has mk 2s and electronic ignition (Luca Rita), Both carbs have been removed and thoroughly cleaned with new gaskets.
I am pricing up a re Jet for both, just to be on the safe side.

Default T140e

Just completed a compression test , albeit with an average quality gauge, and got 145 Psi both sides cold, run the engine a couple of times to get the engine warm (doesnt want to run for long now, and cuts out) and still get 145 Psi each side.
The right piston top looked a bit wet, after the run up, both looked a bit wet, but the plugs were sooty (no hand puppet jokes please!), not wet.

I was going to suggest timing.

changing subject, do you go to the Netley Marsh Auto jumble in September, this used to be a very British affair. Near Southampton.
