Where's your sense of adventure? Checking fluid levels and routine maintenance is far more exciting knowing the bonnet could come down without warning at any time.

It's the American spelling Ian. Prise is preferred!

Given that all car manufacturers will skimp on the cost of components to the detriment of quality I have no idea why Rover fitted gas struts when a simple steel rod would have done the same job for a fraction of the cost.

The link given by Bill also shows how to change the gas strut.

Sadly mine is only roofing batten 25x38mm, though it is finished in a lovely blue colour

I ordered a replacement strut from DMGRS recently when I bought rear suspension arms. I mistakenly misread the webpage and ordered only one, because I thought it was a pack of two....

Just try lifting the R75 bonnet without gas struts fitted and you will then know why!

I've done the bonnet and boot on my ZT with new struts from SGS, along with the boot on my departed Mondeo. Simple to fit and the fact I no longer get a bonnet pin or boot latch in my skull when there's the slightest breeze is an absolute bonus!

I agree with you. There's something very manly about a rod bonnet stay, push-plunger windscreen washer and cranking handle for starting!
