It could have been worse. One of the proposals put forward was a charge for every vehicle crossing into Greater London.
This would have meant my son, who lives outside but travels inside to his place of work every day, would have faced a weekly charge of £62.50, more if he worked at the weekend.
He's already had to move away because he couldn't afford the ridiculous property prices around here.
It amounts to a tax to go to work and/or visit family.

How does the plan to buy an MG electric vehicle compare with this unwelcome extra expenditure? I see that the purchase price starts at £20,000 so we could continue to use our 75/ZTs for fifteen years before we began to lose money. I know it will be less than that because the ULEZ charge will be raised and no doubt VED also as we march towards the day that showrooms have only electric cars for sale. On the other hand EV ownership involves a home charging point and they are rather expensive to install and my electricity unit rate is rising by 38% next month. So I'd say that I can continue to enjoy my catalytic converted non-polluting V6 for the next ten years without losing money in practical terms.

By the way, I think the reason that the Mayor of London is rushing through this escalation is because Transport for London, which relies exclusively upon fares for its income, had to be baled out by central government during the Covid years and there were financial strings attached. The Mayor needs to raise money quickly and, as usual, it's the hapless public which has to pay for the politicians' actions.

Hi Simon, I've been doing some sums too ......

looking at my diary, I use my 75 on average about 4 times a week - now I have my bus pass I've been trying to use it as much as possible, so that has reduced the usage by some.

£12.50 x 4 = £50 per week.

£50 x 52 weeks in a year = £2600 + annual VED £300 = £2900 per annum.

I would expect the above figures to increase every year in line with inflation.

I've ignored the cost of diesel verses electricity and maintenance costs for the purpose of this calculation, but from what we are being told it should be less that the price per mile than diesel.
I have a feeling that governments won't impose VED on electric vehicles until after the 2030 change over deadline.

I would expect a new electric vehicle to last at least 10 years and still have some residual value.

£2900 per year X 10 years = £29,000.

This is almost the purchase price of a new MG ZS Electric model.

Hi Steve,

Surprising isn't it that there's not a lot of difference in purely financial terms between keeping a 75/ZT and buying a new EV.

Of course any of us might choose to do the swap at any time but I think the important point is ... don't panic!

That's been available for years, pops up here now and then. Some have made sensible offers for it but seller doesn't seem interested in selling!

I guess if someone offered the £40K (sensibly or insensibly) they'd take it!

Unlike various main brand dealers I recently experienced when trying to buy a new or nearly new car that were openly advertised as being for sale yet they refused to sell them! They were either showroom or demo cars that they couldn't replace or in once case plain didn't exist!

I doubt they would, sure they were offered the asking price or as near as damn it a number of years ago but wouldn't sell, the price has gone up consistently since. I think its more valuable to them as a talking point. What any prospective buyer need to bear in mind is the substantial cost of recommissioning a car that has sat 17 years without moving.

Perhaps you should think yourselves lucky compared to our friends in Germany. Under their 'Umwelsplakatte" (environment sticker) scheme, it's been totally illegal for some years now to even enter the majority of German cities with a pre-Euro 5 diesel, and that includes the 75 / ZT. I found this out to my cost when visiting Berlin in my long-gone 75 CDTI some years ago when I was heavily fined for unwittingly breaking the rules.
