Head Gasket- MLS or Elastomeric
Hi all,
I been reading up on which HG I should use on a K-series engine. Its leaking coolant from the front and gearbox end, theres no oil/coolant mix and its not overheating and still running 100%. I understand if all the liners are 0.003-0.0004" proud and even above the bock then I use a MLS gasket. If the liners are lower than 0.003 but still even I use a Elastomeric one. And if the liners are uneven I've got problems! Can anyone confirm my thinking? Thanks.

Thanks for that The issue is complicated and could be discussed for days... By experience, it seems to me that combining the the Payen BW750 gasket together with a 0,5mm saver shim, is a very good solution which a have used a few times and seems to be working very well. This combination have the following strong properties: - Elastomer gives a 100% tight fluid seal - The elastomer gasket is less tolerant for liner heights - The saver shim eliminates potential seal problems related to cylinder head porosity - The saver shim (partly) eliminates potential fire ring indentation. |

Simon all you will get is different experiences & opinions. I hesitated giving you mine on your other post.
The consensus I found agrees with your findings, although 0.002" > 0.004" My liners were even height with each other, but anywhere from way less than 1 thou to over 2 thou. I set mine at 0.003 by linishing the block. I was advised to always have the head skimmed, use MLS & fit the uprated oil ladder. I used a "highly rated latest" Victor Reinz gasket set. but if I do it again I will use genuine Land Rover as the Victor Reinz inlet manifold seal gave up after 200ish miles, worrying !. + all genuine, water pump. tensioner, belts head bolts etc. How ever you choose to do it Good luck. Alan

Another vote for the Payen BW750, I use these even if the liner heights are ok.
