Default price of parts

just to make everyone get the parts perspective of older cars versus new!!
Just got a price on a set of rear shock absorbers for my Jeep grand cherokee, $1,100 aud !!!
I then saw a price for a new headlight assembly - $1,800 - thank god i dont need one of those!!
Time to get the ZT out of the garage i think!!

I've noticed this too - I'm pricing up something a little 'newer' that needs to have 4WD for visiting the inlaws and the price of parts on some is astronomical.

The ZT may be safe for a good while yet!

I've recently heard about an issue with the new BMW LED rear light units getting water ingress (er.....).

Apparently they are £300-£400 per unit and no, they can't be repaired and yes they are BMW dealer only.

Ouch

try to even get a hold of some standard parts is hard.
Was to talking to one of our suppliers and they are now having to pay a premium for sea containers as there is a world wide shortage so they then put up product prices to cover their extra costs- inflation here we come!!

I have heard numerous horror stories of parts prices on some cars even stuff that you would consider cheap cars. An ignition coil pack for a Merc at nearly £1k and most dealers keep them in stock because they sell so many. A heater resistor pack for a Renault Clio £350 for some models. A friend with a VW Crafter van needed a new fuel pump, VW want £2600, a diesel specialist said it might be repairable but it would still be about £1000.

There is no way these parts can cost this much to make, I understand manufacturers need to make a profit but these prices are crazy.

A friend of mine used to be the Quality Director for Ford in the 1980s/90s, and even then he said the general mark-up on parts was 400%. Much of the problem is that we don't breed mechanics or fitters these days - they cannot fit a part into a bigger one, they just want to replace the whole item.

That is because we are paying for the R & D , then the tooling that makes the parts, plus 1000% profit plus tax, plus retailer profit margins, plus more tax, then import taxes ( we don't make anything anymore!), so a part that actually costs 2p to make, considering they are going to make half a billion units, ends up consting 400 of your British pounds, that is how the world goes round, consuming, consuming etc, eventually we turn all the Earth's natural resources into un-recyclable waste, we destroy the natural world, and Man becomes extinct, or if you are rich enough you can pay to go anf live on Mars?.

Jus to give you some idea, the injection mould tool for a rear light would be somewhere between 150k and 250k

Or could it be a concerted effort to start making fossil fuel cars so expensive to repair that we all decide there just not worth fixing and we scrap them and pay the extra for an electric one !!

THERE you have it!, that is why even the flimsiest crappiest part costs so much. That is why is so important to have a healthy home grown industry.
