Default rear damper bolts

does anyone know what the bolt thread size is for the rear damper to hub bolts on the rover 75 kv6 stock hub. they are called dog nose !! or similar name. the size looks like it may be an english size as the nearest size in metric is 14 +mm x 2mm pitch. im looking to buy a tap just in case i have problems with a job coming up and needed to run a tap through . 14 + mm threads i have seen but up to 1.75 pitch only . never 2.0 so im thinking it may be an oddball size that rover have used ? anyone ?

just a word of warning, they can be cross threaded when put back in so be careful.
As for needing a tap, I would be surprised, they are quite a thread to ruin

thanks for the reply. i have just ammended the above thread after remeasuring again. i have not got exact readings as my tools are not handy. the thread is definitely slightly over 14mm dia and the pitch looks 2mm or thereabouts. the only size that comes near is 9/16ths. bsw ? the reason im asking is i recall having a problem before on one hub and it may have like you have already pointed out tried to go in crossed. i sorted it out last time but just in case i needed to rerun a tap im trying to find the exact thread size and type.do you know if rover would have used such an alternative thread or size not being metric ? thanks again for your reply.

Thread in the trailing arm to mount the rear shocker is M14 x 2.0 (standard pitch)

I had an issue with a stripped thread. I bought a helicoil kit, but wasn't able to drill out from under the car directly down the original. Really need a drill jig.

I got a replacement trailing arm and refurbished off the car in the end.

thanks typhoon190.trikey agrees with you with that size but he will double check for me tomorrow. i dont forsee a problem but thought it a good idea to run a tap through first beforehand. dont fancy your last episode in the middle of a rear end job. i will go gingerly after a tapping and plenty coppaslip i think......

Yes I have had the same thing happen - the old bolt picked up on the way out damaging the hole thread. Luckily I had the correct tap to hand which had been bought in error a few months before for another job.

Ran the tap through the hole and it cleaned up perfectly.

The hub metal seems very soft - I've pulled threads out of 3 so far!
A right pain to helicoil too, so I just fitted a good used hub.

M14 x 2.0 is indeed correct, and a standard bolt of the correct length and tensile rating will do the job fine (as long as you're careful when fitting).

After the one I had that picked up I wire brush the tip of the bolt that is exposed and check that the thread is clean before undoing it.

thanks mike. looking at the new bolts (i have 2 from rimmers ) they are described as "dog nose " bolts . they are tapered at the end of the thread slightly and finish with a step then an unthreaded part for about 10mm aprox on the end. i dont know if these are the same as the 2002 bolts that i have on my dampers (originals) .. i cannot remember but i doubt if i can access the ends of the threads to clean up. fingers crossed they come out ok and the threads are still good when i do the job in a week or so.
