Default Tourer gas struts

Well today my boot was very heavy to open. My gas struts are on the way out. They look like they have been welded in place. Do you think its going to be hard to change them. Plus where is the best place to get them from.

SGS sell top quality gas struts.

https://www.sgs-engineering.com/car-boot-tailgate

They aren't welded into place- they couldn't be- there is a clip at each end with a recess behind it. Wedge the boot open with a piece of wood, place the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver behind the clip and into the recess and twist it, the clip will pop off. When you have done both ends the strut will just pull off.

The new strut can just be pushed into place. It takes maybe two minutes to change both.

That would help because I can't really visualise what is going on here. The ball joints are welded to the tailgate and main frame but the struts have to be free to pivot or the tailgate wouldn't open and close.

Hi Amanda.
Do you mean that a plate as been welded to the side panel of the tail gate, as opposed to using bolted plate as in the photo below.

we fit these at the Nano meets as a precaution to stop the strut from pulling out of the side panel.

They can pull through due to the spot weld giving way, because the strut flexing the thin sheet metal.

You see the horseshoe clip at the bottom? Just push the blade of a flat-bladed screwdriver behind that and twist it. The clip will pop off and the strut can then be pulled away.
