Clock ticking on my 75

Well, with Fridays announcement that the London low emission zone (ULEZ) will be extending to the outer London boroughs by the end of 2023, looks like my 75 ownership has now less than 2 years to run.
I will be trying to get as much use / pleasure out of it before it has to go as I do not wish to have to pay £12.50 per day to use it.

But the front runner to replace it at the moment is an MG ZS electric with the long range battery pack.

Same here. Absolutely gutted and like you I'll be using and enjoying the ZT-T as much as possible before the deadline.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this Steve as I will be affected too. I also dislike being presented with taxes like this one. However I've been doing some sums.

I use my 75 for long journeys, not for driving around Greater London. If I used it twice a week, every week, I would have to pay 2 x £12.50 x 52 = £1,300 p.a. to the Greater London Authority. Ouch, it's a lot isn't it.

How does the plan to buy an MG electric vehicle compare with this unwelcome extra expenditure? I see that the purchase price starts at £20,000 so we could continue to use our 75/ZTs for fifteen years before we began to lose money. I know it will be less than that because the ULEZ charge will be raised and no doubt VED also as we march towards the day that showrooms have only electric cars for sale. On the other hand EV ownership involves a home charging point and they are rather expensive to install and my electricity unit rate is rising by 38% next month. So I'd say that I can continue to enjoy my catalytic converted non-polluting V6 for the next ten years without losing money in practical terms.

By the way, I think the reason that the Mayor of London is rushing through this escalation is because Transport for London, which relies exclusively upon fares for its income, had to be baled out by central government during the Covid years and there were financial strings attached. The Mayor needs to raise money quickly and, as usual, it's the hapless public which has to pay for the politicians' actions.

Well said Simon,it's nothing more than another tax.And it will be coming to a town near you in the not too distant future.In the bigger picture the UK is responsible for less than 1% of annual global emmisions.

Precisely, so we are strangling ourselves for the moral high ground, just needs China or India to delay their cutbacks by a small amount and we will not be noticed.

Let that figure sink in while people are being hammered in the pocket in this country for the sake of being green.

Get an MGZT 260 as the are exempt atm. I don't have to pay with mine but do with my cdti, Jag etc

^This^ There will be air quality issues in neighbouring towns next to CAZ's where older cars will be pushed out to in the not too distant future. DPD the delivery company has hundreds of their vans equipped with roof mounted mobile air quality monitoring sensors & fixed sensors in towns & cities that transmit over 1.5 million air quality readings every 12 seconds of every day

Just a thought. If you live inside the proposed zone, as I do, but don't travel outside it, how will the tax grabbers know you've used your car without installing cameras on every corner? The costs of the required infrastructure would surely be huge.
At the moment I regularly travel outside the zone for work and to visit family but I may have retired by the end of 2023, so Simon's sums make interesting reading.
