WiFi range
We have what is best described as a granny flat built onto the side of our house. Currently I have a WiFi booster thingy to extend the WiFi but it is most unreliable. I suspect that this is due to our router being in the living room and the extender being on what would have originally been the outside of an external wall ( now a wee passageway linking a shower room extension/ granny flat and garage.!)
How can I boost the signal through the walls or is it possible to get an internet socket installed ? Thanks in advance for your assistance |

Is the granny flat on the same earth loop as the rest of the house?

As already said, if it's on the same mains supply, use a powerline adapter.
I'm with virgin Media & their hub 3.0 is terrible as far as coverage goes although 0f course, they deny this! I got so fed up with it that I ended up getting my own Netgear Nighthawk dual-band router & put the hub 3.0 in Modem mode. I now get full speed all over the house, up the end of the garden (50ft) & outside the front of the house (on the road). No wi-fi extenders or powerline adapters in use. |

1. Change away from an ISP supplied router to something decent - there is a reason most ISP routers are free/almost free!
2. If you can, have some cat6 network cabling installed, you can then use an old router in access point mode to improve coverage (in essence, creating a second hotspot but with the same name so your devices will transfer seamlessly) 3. If (2) is not possible, powerline adapers are a good cheap, easy fix - but they work best when both socket outlets are on the same power circuit. |
