Behind the O/S/R wheel is what looks like a metal cover for wiring harness etc. Mine is very rusty. I can't seem to identify it on Rimmers. I'd love to get a nice one to replace it. Anyone know what it is and if there are any still about new or S/H that aren't red rust like mine? I'd' take a pic but the wheel is obviously in the way...

Hi Dawn.
Do you mean the metal cover for the wiring to the fuel pump etc, in the photo below. if so ask Mickyboy if he as one that you can clean up while it is off the car.

They are all pretty rusty nowadays Dawn, although they do clean up rather well.

Put plenty of penetrating oil on the nuts as you don't want to snap the threads when removing them (And its easily done)

That's it! After reading that thread and your comments chaps I think I will leave it alone. I'll try and clean it up a bit and get some rust converter on it as it looks messy.

If you can, get it off and clean out behind it, mine was full of muck and dirt, quite damp too.I did break one of the nuts, so it sits slightly proud of the body now, I dont plan on fixing it though, as it will allow more dirt to fall out lol (everything behind it is holding firm for past 3 years so confident it will perform its armouring duties - part 13)

I am terrified of breaking the nuts after all the comments. Don't think with my luck I dare try removal!

While you are there, have a look where the cables disappear into the body at the front end. The wires from there are run inside a piece of thin tubing round under the rear offside seat. When I replaced my in tank pump, I noticed that the pipe was really rotten with rust, and some water had made its way onto the floor inside. I caught it just in time, and bought some spray foam and sprayed it up the pipe work towards the rear until it came out in the rear wheel well.I then covered it with under seal. Another little known access point for water to rot your car away.

Removed it a painted with Hammerite.





Think I had to replace a couple of the nuts too.

You will be ok Dawn, just clean off the crud, then spray penetrating oil on for a few hours before undoing them

agreed, I sprayed with a penetrating oil, wire brushed, turned the nuts gently, and if it tightened up, I tightened up again, wire brush. The two that broke on me, snapped when I used the wire brush on them (shows you how bad they were lol)
