Default Throw away your EGR and save MPG

Sorry Steve (!) . . . but just returned from a 1556 mile trip from Somerset to the beautiful Isle of Arran and Gatehouse of Fleet to return the best MPG I've ever seen. 45.5mpg where previously I've never seen better than 41mpg. (Six months ago I removed the EGR and blanked off the orifice).

PS the diesel Tourer has now done 153K and is as smooth (remapped by Big Russ) as when I bought it 9 years ago.

It still needs some work, i got 52mpg to wales and back couple of weeks ago, 260 mile round trip, regular 48/50mpg on good runs, various speed from 55mph to 75mph, nice to kick the cobwebs out now and again, EGR gutted and blanked, 3 ringed intercooler O-rings, cleaned out manifold & clean MAP sensor, clean air filter, proper fuel filter, and a MB special upgrade

"Anything you can do I can do better . . ."

(But now I'm confused: I thought you were all for retaining the EGR - as long it's fettled, polished, gleamed - possibly re-silvered etc etc)

Hi Dave.
Yes i am all for having a clean EGR manifold & MAP sensor, but the choice for the EGR being gutted/fettled and blocked off is personal to each person, and also some may not be able to gut them, i do not like the after market bypass EGR they look out of place,

I think you have guessed which one i have on my car, if not a clue below ever since 2011

A quote from a government consultation. Green paper likely very shortly:

Tackling tampering
We will create new offences for tampering with a system, part or component of a vehicle intended or adapted to be used on a road. This will enable us to address existing gaps in the legislation, ensuring cleaner and safer vehicles. We will also create new offences for tampering with non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) and for advertising ‘tampering’ services or products.

This will strengthen our ability to enforce compliance in this area.

We are aware that the Law Commissions in both their first and third consultations on automated vehicles have considered tampering. We await their final recommendations and would welcome views on our proposals, as follows.

Specifically, we would look to create:

a specific offence for supplying, installing and/or advertising, a ‘tampering product’ for a vehicle or NRMM – this would apply where a principal effect of the product is to bypass, defeat, reduce the effectiveness of or render inoperative a system, part or component (the product may be a physical part or component, hardware and/or software)
a specific offence for removing, reducing the effectiveness of, or rendering inoperative a system, part or component for a vehicle/NRMM and advertising such services
a specific offence for allowing for use or providing a vehicle or NRMM that has had the operations described in the previous 2 points performed on it
a new power to require economic operators to provide information, where a service/product they have supplied amounts to or enables ‘tampering’ with a vehicle or NRMM – this would apply in any of the above senses and include requirements to provide relevant information on the quantities of products sold or modified

There you go then going forward it's best to just clean the EGR, so all those after market EGR by pass products sold on ebay sellers will get stuck with them, start stocking up on swarfega, cheep tooth brushes, car cleaner, rags, maybe purchase an EGR to work on to clean and always have have a spare to change out once a year.

Cleaning is not tampering
