that will do thankyou.

when i get the fluid from landrover or x part i will heat some up to the temp and have some at outside temp and mesure the amount of mils there is but i honestly cant see there being a difference apart from the viscosity when its warmer

Somebody did a comparison between the Volume of ATF at room temp and the Volume at somewhere around 40degrees Centigrade and came up with the result that the expansion factor was miniscule.

I did. And it is on the forum somewhere.
Stupidity knows no bounds. The only antidote is independent thinking and common sense.
The problem with that is that common sense is becoming rather uncommon.

I might have guessed as much - another case of the manufacturer making it sound complicated, highly technical, and obviously beyond the capabilities of us numpties, and therefore we need to visit an 'expert'.

That's the stuff.
I drained out just over 3 and a half litres.
My auto-box expert mate who was helping me wasn't happy with the smell of the old oil - seriously!
He said that if it smelt at all of 'toast' then it was overdue for changing.
I was carrying out the job according to the Jatco schedule, but as I do a lot of towing he said I should change it more often.
As you can only get so much of the old oil out he had me go through the whole procedure again the next weekend - so I changed the oil twice - wife couldn't believe it - shades of 'deja vu' she said.
Anyway the oil was cheaper than a gear-box repair would be.
I now change the oil at 36000 rather than the 60000 that Jatco suggest.

Between 3.5 and 4 litres should be the norm. Land rover sell it in litre bottles or you can get 5litres from xpart or rimmers.

By far the easiest way to ensure the correct quantity, is to measure exactly the amount drained and replace with exactly the same quantity in new. Can be done cold if you are worried about the expansion.

i dont trust that the amount in it is right so best to do it the right way from scratch sooner have the right amount in first time rather than a wrong amount again

Default Auto oil

I would not trust just replacing the amount which comes out. Somebody could have added a pint for luck or there could have been some fluid loss.
It is perfectly straightforward to drain correctly, add four litres, drive to warm the box up if you wish, and then check the level following the correct procedure.
