I’ve watched a postman walk up the drive and put a card through the door to say that they tried to deliver, but there was no-one home.

I've had that myself but I think it was just too much weight and shape of the parcels which needed to be delivered/carried by one person. So, I wasn't too bothered that a card was used for me to collect.

Couriers are an absolute nightmare. DPD is, in my experience, the worst. UPS the best.
