Default Brake pedal judder + wheel wobble

Hi all,

I'm getting judder in the brake pedal and wobble in the steering wheel when braking. The harder you brake the more noticeable it is.

I assumed it must be a warped brake disc but some reading around suggests that there can be other causes.

What should I check? (And in what order?)

Many thanks.

It could be a worn wheel bearing, jack it up and check for wobble at the hub, also while it is off the ground spin the wheel to check it is not the disc binding/warped, and for any grinding noise from the hub.

Hi Tim.
At what speeds 5/10mph or at any speeds when braking, if the slower speed sounds like ABS is kicking in, could be due to rust on one of the front or rear bearing, is the ABS light flickering ?

I'm sure the issue isn't ABS related. The problem is most noticeable when braking hard from high speed and the rate of the judder is proportional to the speed of the car.

(I should add that my initial assumption was that a patch of rust had built up on one of the discs and that this might wear off with use, however it's just come back from a week of brisk driving around the b-roads of Suffolk that didn't cure the problem!

If you have a clock gauge check the discs are running true, and if not then remove them and check the hubs themselves. I had a bent hub a few years ago.

I have had "warped" discs in the past which had similar symptoms.

The other posters above all and each have vastly more experience than me but for years I have had a brake judder despite replacing front discs (Pagid) and pads. Last week I replaced the pads and this time took more time and trouble by properly filing and cleaning the pad carrier in all its grooves - and smearing with Copaslip as the excellent Rimmer Bros chappy shows. Judder cured. Never had such smooth braking.

'In the process of replacing my discs and the old ones are in a shocking state. Don't just check the outer surface, look at the inside one too, one of mine had fairly large section flake off the back!
