Default TOAF - DDE/DME - errors 3

Hi All,

I’m scanning my car with TOAF and amongst other errors that I can clear, I get DDE/DME - errors 3. Can anyone tell me what this refers to and why I don’t appear to be able to clear it.

Any feedback appreciated.

Regards,

Terry

I believe these codes refer to the main ECU (diesel/petrol respectively) mybe if there's a fault with that, you can't clear it...? But I don't know for sure

Not sure if I've heard of the petrol main ECU referred to in those terms, but certainly diesel.

So the OP has 3 errors, doesn't he have to expand them and treat them individually, finding which ones he can / can't delete? (Very few diesels here so unfamiliar).

(Slight hijack - Toaf website's down and I need the driver, having unexpectedly big problems with Windows (), could you send it to me, but more importantly instructions how to install the damn thing. Thanks).

Digital motor electronics for petrol, digital diesel electronics for diesel. Think they're BMW terms, or maybe Siemens – is it they who make the Rover ECUs? Can’t remember now.

I can’t remember much about TOAF now as it’s well over a year ago, so not sure about clearing the errors etc, sorry.

I’ll see if I still have the drivers. As regards installing them, maybe a wee bit about Windows does these things would be useful. I know we have our little jokes about Windows vs IS etc, but joking aside, the reason the Windows Device Manager is accessible (Apples have one too, but it’s hidden well under the hood. Can’t remember what it’s called… system profiler or something maybe?) is because, whereas Apple make both the hardware and the software, everything can be made to “just work” (most of the time), Windows has to cope with many thousands of different manufacturers’ devices (eg sound/video/network chips).

Normally DM does a pretty good job of this without user input, but only if the hardware manufacturer makes it so. Otherwise, manual intervention is sometimes necessary.

Anyway, if it can't do it automatically, you need to open DM, and you’ll see all the hardware in your machine. The driver you're struggling with will be the USB – OBDII cable, nothing directly to do with TOAF itself.
When Windows sees new hardware, it looks for a driver. If it’s something well-known like an NVIDIA video chip or Realtek network chip, it’ll consult huge internal and online databases for a match, and download the driver.

If it can't find one, it’ll have something called “Unknown Device” or similar shown, probably under USB controllers. Right-click on the unknown device, and there will a function to update the driver or something – sorry, long time since I did this, and I haven't got an unknown device to refresh my memory with!

You then get to browse anywhere you like – go to the folder where the driver is, and it should pick it up. Basically it looks for a .inf file which tells it what hardware it’s for.

If it finds it, it’ll use it to install the driver, and the Unknown Device should change to whatever it’s really called – and work.

Feel free to pick what’s left of my brains again if you can’t get it to work, Mike.

Oh – and you also have to choose the right virtual comms port. Think you right click on the installed USB device, select Properties, and you can choose it from a drop down. There’s also a drop down in TOAF, from memory, and they need to be the same number.

Good luck, Meester Bond…

OK, doesn't look like there's any facility for me to attach the drivers, so I'll email them to you. At least I think they'll be the right ones!

I am trying to make sense of this post, and at the risk of sounding rather rude, in plain King's English what exactly does the above post actually mean, is it intended to be confusing or is it encrypted, as a private message?, please expand.
Thanks

I think it's an example of "fat finger" typing - road should read toaf. If you look at a standard keyboard r is next to t, and d next to f.

Thumbs up

Toad is a diagnostic tool and given the proximity of the letters T and R on a QWERTY keyboard maybe "road" was a simple typo.

Regards TOAF and instructions, I have both on file Mike together with a little resizing tool which you can use to adjust TOAF to fit full screen. Works ok on my 17" screen laptop but yet to try it on slightly smaller screens. Ideally I would like it to resize TOAF to use on my small Asus eee PC with a 7" screen but I haven't had any success with it. The developer for the resizing tool does in effect state that it might not always work in every situation but he provides it for free and it might work for some.

Let me know if you don't get sorted and I can try to get my file to you.
