Default My Rover 75 Vanden Plas

Sadly I found out last week that my good old Rover75 Vanden Plas (Long wheel base) Connoisseur - or however you spell it - head gasket has gone, after 10 years or so of use. Any advice out there as to what to do with it? If I scrap it, ill get £100 which is not much, but perhaps someone might take it off my hands to either restore (as its a pretty rare model) or use for parts? Anyway, be grateful to hear.

The first thing to do is be 100% sure the head gasket has gone, there's a tendency for mechanics (even trusted long term family used ones) to diagnose HGF simply because they're faced with a rover 75 that has overheating/coolant loss or lumpy engine.

If it has, the car has done you well for ten years, getting it fixed will be far cheaper than replacing it and you'll know it's otherwise sound, but use one of the specialists recommended by members here.

You need to state symptoms so we can get an idea what might be wrong.

If the cars general condition other than the potential engine issue is good, I would say it's worth putting another engine in for a keen enthusiast.

When people log onto these forums after first registration, there should be a big warning sign that reads "Have a V6-powered 75/ZT and believe you have HGF? Think again !" and link to an explanation of what other causes could exist for overheating/loss of coolant.

All in a very friendly manner, of course...

"London" is a big place, so whereabouts in London are you? then perhaps someone who is able to, will offer to look at it, or put you in touch with a reliable person who can.

Allon,

I absolutely agree with Rooney, Rev Jules, scoubix and planenut. You have most likely received an incorrect diagnosis. Please tell us more. Is the engine overheating? Is it ejecting coolant from the expansion tank? Do you have mayonnaise in the engine oil or coolant?

It might surprise you to know that all of those symptoms are caused by lesser problems than head gasket failure.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Simon

PS Yes, which area of London?

But not always Simon, however I agree the OP should get a second opinion from someone who doesn't come out with the most common knee jerk reaction to overheating problems when presented with a Rover

I wonder what happened to this. At the time, I expressed interest in having this.

Last online 12 July, my bet is he scrapped it! Seems he didn't want advice after all.
