Unless there is a restriction (medical reasons etc.), a licence is valid until the holder is 70, then it needs to be renewed every 3 years.

Unless it is a northern Irish one, in which case needs to be renewed every 10 years (previously every 4, prior to 1984/5 if I recall).

If it's a 'credit card' type licence with the holder's photo on it then it needs to be renewed every 10 years, regardless of age.

It's the photograph that needs to be renewed every 10 years - the date for that is part 4b on the front of the card, the date the licence is valid until is column 11on the back.

Intrigued by the advice to renew before 70. What would be the benefit? Don't you have to apply again for a licence when you reach 70?
Yes you paper licence automatically lasts until you are 70 and as you have told me all the details on it are correct there is no need to change it until you are approaching your 70th birthday.

The benefit for me is that my new photo card licence has a photograph and my name and address on it. I can use it for ID purposes instead of my passport and/or utility bills. It depends if that helps you at all and in any case when you get your new licence at 70 that will be a photo card licence. You take your choice and pay the money as it were.

Thanks for all the advice.
My original query was how long did I have to produce my licence if required by the Police.
P-Nut says 7 days but 75c says that information is now obsolete.
So, still not sure.

You probably will never need to produce your licence to the police, it's all digital and checked before they even ask you if you have a licence, unless you have been issued with a producer .... it's 7 days from the date on the producer anyway.

This is copied from the .gov site regarding your rights if stopped by the Police:

If you’re stopped, the police can ask to see your:

driving licence
insurance certificate
MOT certificate
If you don’t have these documents with you, you have 7 days to take them to a police station. You’re breaking the law if you don’t show the requested documents within 7 days.
