Beware of Congestion Zone Charges!
Whilst in Italy, this chap entered a restricted zone 44 times without realising.
He is now facing fines, sent to him in the UK, totalling £8,500.

I had for some time now realised that driving down through France etc to get to a holiday destination is expensive compared to flying and hiring a car when there. This report underlines the issue even more. So I’ll let an aircraft do my polluting ........ |

Dear me that most have taken the wind out of sails when he opened that letter.
There's over 200 cities across Europe that have seasonal or full time ULEZ's this year too, It pays to do some research if you're going over there in a car.

I wonder how many fines we send off to Europe for all those old polluting cars being driven in London’s ULEZ that are being driven on foreign plates?

I checked this out a while back (only by googling it 😃 as there are plenty of reports of foreign plated cars ignoring our fines etc. It seems UK law states that the driver of the car must be identified whereas with EU law any fine is just sent to and is the responsibility of the registered keeper. So whilst we in the U.K. find it almost impossible to collect such fines - we are happy to play ball with everyone else. |

I cannot post links - but I just googled it again and it confirms various reports from 2016/17 that whilst U.K. Law requires the Driver to be identified - EU law requires the registered owner to be responsible for fine payment.
I googled “European car fines identifies the driver” It provides lots of links indicating that EU countries can ask for and get the registered owners details from the DVLA and under thier law - that person is responsible for fine payment. |

A Land Rover Series One owner from Switzerland last year ended up with a £1000 fine for entering the then LEZ in London, twice . He appealed & it was cancelled as if he had registered it with TFL it would have been exempt as Historic.

Strange these ULEZ rules, mate has a diesel Skoda that qualifies for ZERO ROAD TAX due to its low emissions, but does not meet ULEZ exemption criteria.
I have recently acquired a 2007 Diahatsu Sirion, £190 road tax - so not deemed as low emission but is exempt from the ULEZ charges ! |
