Oh hang on I pay £1700 a year in VED already, I might get that over £2000 if I can persuade SWMBO that a ultra low mileage Freelander TD4 automatic should join the stable. Anyway, I can understand the ZT being expensive to tax, but the TF Brian |

Its what Tracey wanted, and who am I to argue. If I had my way I would have bought a Range Rover, but that may still happen one day, wink wink. What amazes me though, is the 0.9Tce 3 pot engine actually drives like a 2.0ltr once you use the Turbo, if I switch to ECO mode the money saving just keeps adding up. oh dam, my mistake the 1.8 TF is £300, £315 if paying in instalments, that's still just £26 cheaper than a 190ZT, shocking really. Haven't they done away with the really cheap road tax system now?
I think newer cars are back to about £145 a year for a little one. May keep our 14 plate Suzuki a bit longer as it only costs £30 a year lol. New cars are better in most respects, you can't really argue the fact. But I still get a lot of enjoyment out of driving my old nail of a Rover 75.

The diesel issue is another problem altogether, sadly the diesel owner will most probably end up paying the price.
It all boils down to common sense I guest, I reckon by myself using the governments idea/format to work in our favour has 100% paid-off for us. I have made quite a considerable amount of saving by using the system to suit our needs. I certainly don't understand why the VED prices changed again after 31st March 2017 for all new cars, the new rates brought higher first year fees which alienated a lot customers from buying a new car. 2017 was the year that made diesels un-cool, if I recall correctly the Dacia and Renault dealerships didn't have enough petrol models to cope with demand. The forecourts were full of diesel models and customers were wanting to trade their not so very old diesel in for a petrol model. I myself purposely bought our petrol model Dacia before March 2017 which allowed our model to fall into the low £30 VED price due to it having the Stop/Start feature, it was the only petrol Laureate model available in the UK at the time that was pre-2017 registered with the stop/start feature. I had my name down on a list at ten Renault dealerships across the country for this one certain model, many folk were doing the same which was all due to the £145 new change in VED and the diesel scaremongering. Lets say if I were to buy the same model Dacia today NEW, or even a used one that was registered after 31st March 2017, I would now need to be paying £145 VED. I was adamant that I didn't want to pay the higher £145 VED price, because the whole point of us changing from a gas guzzling Ford Galaxy 2.3i to a very clever medium size SUV with a small 900cc engine was to save on VED and fuel costs. The system can work for many people, a bit of common sense goes along way in the bigger picture of things. It just annoys me that I'm paying only £30 VED for a car which we use everyday, and also paying over £650 for two old MG's which use the roads once in awhile, I haven't found away to get around this yet. |

you lucky lucky bustards
Here in the Emerald Isle all is green........ with envy Try €1080 (£952.86) per annum for the 190. i say yes to fuel surcharge to offset road tax is a fairer system as the apparent non compliance rate here is pretty obvious as we still have the disc display system.. However, the bug has a hold of me and the Dacia is just not a RoverMG |

What I pay in road tax on my 2.5 would only fill it up about 4 times. You can bet any increase in fuel duty to replace the RFL would see the majority of us net losers.

I think when folk are in the market to buy a new/newer car, there are obviously certain criteria that must meet their needs. For example, is said person a one car family, or do they have more than one vehicle and are simply replacing the daily driver. We ourselves bought the Dacia to replace the old Ford Galaxy, it was never a replacement for the ZT, I still have both the ZT and TF which I do drive. I think when folk start comparing new cars with old, you are never going to get a good comparison. I would have bought the MG GS SUV if it had a lower CO2, the whole idea of buying a Dacia was about saving some pennies. |

It will all change again as more and more motorist's switch to electrified vehicles. The first noticeable changed to delete the lower CO2 vehicle VED prices was in March 2017, this was when the £145 blanket cover band came in for all new vehicles below a certain value.
The money pot was becoming empty because many motorists were buying low emission cars, that has now been tackled with the introductory of the second year increased VED rate for all new cars. Last edited by Dallas; 29th May 2019 at 12:48.. |

I also see they allow you to tax a vehicle for 3 months, my ZT190 would cost roughly £260 just for 3 months (£910 for 12 months). The 900cc Dacia with Stop/Start would cost £176 for 12 months, blimey! I think if I had to pay £910 to tax my ZT, and £560 for the TF, that would be the day I start riding my bike. |
