Another 75 CDTI starting problem
Hey guys,
Ok so i've been trying to fix my brothers 75 for a while now. Long origin story the car wouldn't start last year and couldn't work out why thought maybe it was down on power jumped it and it ran. Brother took it to a garage who told him it was glow plugs?? I'm not sure about that but hey ho they replaced them and it ran....for like a week. Another garage had the car and found the ECU was drowned they F****** about with it for a while and told him that it just kept blowing ecu's so it was a write off. They dropped it with me and I've been doing damage control since, replaced several sensors that had failed and the in tank pump that had packed up. I replaced the drowned ecu with a matched ECU, EWS and KEY, tested the power to the injectors using a node and they are getting the pulse now but still no cigar, sometimes the car will cough when cranking and almost fire but still no. I am pretty much at the end of my abilities thus far. Could this be injector related? Would a leak back test show if the injectors are warn out? or am i still chasing an ecu problem. any help is massively appreciated Rich |

Hey guys sorry forgot to mention I already tried with a sniff of easy start, no joy she fires and immediately dies, yes both pumps fire up with the ignition on but do seem to take a long time to prime but from what i've read that is fairly normal on this car.

Might be worth getting a T4 or someone with a diagnostic kit that can read fuel pressures when cranking to check if it is high enough. If it's not high enough it won't start. Just to rule out pump issues.

HI Richard.
Where did you get the ECM & EWS key etc from and do you still have your original ECM if so send it to MarinaBrian to take a look at as using another ECM & EWS /key will work but not as it should properly. The glow plugs would have been a false avenue really, have you done a leak back test, do you have an under bonnet pump, is that running ok? as the ECM you have fitted ever been wet? you need to get it on a T4 if you can save you the trouble of second guessing.

I have had it hooked to the TOAF software to read the pressures and at crank the rail is reading 317 BAR give or take. Not sure what the pressure should be at the rail tbh. It also reckons I'm getting 3.7 BAR from the LP pumps. Not 100% sure how accurate those reading are as i don't have much experience with the software.

All items removed from a running car at a scrappers, yes i do have an UBP both that and ITP are running. I have opened and examined the ecu and all seems clean and good (I do have some knowledge with PCB's in computers and consoles) and all components look good and no evidence of water damage. My hope had been to be able to run her on the replacement parts at least long enough to get her to a specialist. |

Have you tried a different cam sensor? Does the rev counter needle move slightly when cranking?
