Unhappy Think this is where me and my 75 Seperate! Re Abs :(

Hi All.
Just wanted to follow up my last post about my abs fault, some may remember recent threads.
Well, it was back at the garage today to investigate possible abs pump failure. Under more testing, it's not the abs pump which is at fault, it's the abs ecu!!! Garage said they tested the pump, by passing the ecu and all tested fine. Think he said something about testing it under load and that passed too. He said, he thinks someone as been in there before as the bolts should be the same tension, but some were only finger tight. He thinks the ecu may have a crack on the board or such like hence problem with it communicating with the pump. He found some corrosion on the connectors and clean them, but made no difference. He told me he took the bosch numbers off the bottom to get some prices. He said bosch stopped repairing them 4 years ago, and they could send a new one for £750 that didn't need coding. My garage disagreed with him, and said it still thought it would need coding! Garage said he wouldn't know for sure, until it was installed. I've told him just to put the car back together and I'm going to get rid of it!! I don't want to spend around £1000 to find out it'll still need coding. Garage also states I'm getting a error with the valve relay, but he did say this could be connected with the abs ecu fault.
Needless to say I've had it with my car. I just don't have the money to be thrown at it. Todays bill is £114 and I paid £154 on Saturday to try and solve my problem. So anyone want a Rover 75 Classic Se 1.8 2001 car??

This is indeed a sad story to tell. But like I'm also finding out you sometimes need deep pockets to keep these cars on the road.

Hi apywell. Yeah, finding that out myself for sure. Only owned the car for about 5 weeks. Thought because it's a 51 reg, it'll be worth spending money on it, until the abs fault came along. It is really sad for me, as I know I will miss it when it's gone as I've been here before! Sold my rover connie and missed it, so got this one. But, just find abs seem all to common for me on the Rover 75's. Had 2, both Abs faults. Wish it wasn't so

Sorry to hear, but not surprised in what your doing.

As the cars get older, they become more expensive to run. Sometimes it's just not worth spending the money on them anymore.

Hope your new ride is less troublesome.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

Wish I could help, but it's a bit far.

A seconhand ABS pump / valve / ECU assembly, plus maybe some replacement terminals in the wiring would probably fix it quite quickly.

Still not convinced about the story your garage are giving you. The ABS ECU is on a hybrid IC, not a PCB. It doesn't need coding as far as I know. The ECU's are sealed and not repairable anyway. The corroded terminals would as predicted, give strange faults like this.

Given more time I'd like to fix it just to prove a point, but I think 1 75 in the family is enough right now.

Why not try a second hand abs ecu from a breaker? If it fixes it then great if not then get rid.

Garages often say things but in reality they are guessing.

One of my previous cars went in for an MOT and failed on brakes, £600 to put new discs replace binding callipers ect. I declined their offer and went to another garage where it passed.

I drove it for a number of years afterwards and the brakes never had a problem.

My previous Rover 800 had a persistant fault with the ABS and a used ecu
from a breakers fixed it.

Got to be worth a try.

That's probably not a bad idea. ECU itself is quite easy to change. However if the terminals are corroded it won't fix it so easily.

If you really want rid, I'm so tempted.....

If the terminals on the plug on your car are corroded then see if the breakers will also include the plug and 20cm or so of the wire loom.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and heatshrink sleeve then it easy to splice the new wires onto your original loom.

Basically as everyone above has already said the ABS unit rarely fails yours being the first reported one on the forum

So any breaker will have loads they can't shift and hence it will be cheap
Then it is just down to getting it fitted and the system bled through

I would be tempted to fit one first before looking at any connector problems

Coding is not a big issue all that happens is the GM SA and VN codes common to your car are uploaded to the replacement ECU so for example it knows if you have traction control or not, 15 minutes work and 30 minutes labour charge on T4 max
