Default Gearbox oil

Hi all

I am changing the gearbox oil on my 75 diesel for the life of me the draining plug won't loosen however I managed to loosen the filler plug could I suck the old gear oil out from the filler plug any advice would be greatly appreciated

How are you trying to loosen the drain plug? If just a short allan key or ratchet on a torx bit you may well not have the leverage, for some reason they are very tight when it comes to undoing them.

You may be able to suck the oil out but you would need to measure how much you remove to give you an idea on how well you have done. I've never tried to suck it out.

You won’t get the oil out bu suction, plus you risk trapping the pipe in amongst the workings of the gearbox, get an 8mm 1/2” drive socket then put a long extension bar on, you can then undo the plug using a T bar which will equalise the forces upon it.

I'm planning on changing oil myself for the first time for years. I have a drain can, but what do others recommend for disposal? In the late seventies I'd save it for lighting the bonfire on Nov 5th, but I'm guessing that's not a good option any more!

Your local dump should take all used oil for free - ours does, along with old brake fluid.
