Morning JP, No manners this lot, to the club, sorry to hear you are having problems.

HGF is very inlikely on the KV6 but not unheard of. It would ony fail if severly overheated. This is usually caused by leaking T'stat or a faulty fan.

Depending on the age of your car it may have a two or three speed fan. Three speeders are a known weak spot whilst two speeders are very robust once the original resistor is upgraded ( this runs the slow speed)

To check the fan, start engine and turn air con to low ( make sure it is not in economy mode) and the fan should run, if it does not then work is reqd on the fan.

In your case it is more likely to be stuck stat, water loss or faulty sensor so get the garage to check that side out first, look for water in the V of the engine, thats where the stat lives.

Good luck and please keep everone informed

Welcome along..as others have said, thermostat, fan and header cap are more common then head gaskets on the V6. Not doubting the competency of the garage, but unless they are Rover experienced, they may miss diagnose HGF as "they all do that sir", which is untrue on the v6.

It could simply be a failing header tank cap?

If your cooling level is fine, then you have a problem with the fan not coming on correctly, or a thermostat which is stuck close.

However garages being what they are, verify you water every day, don't trust the gauge and check for leaks in any case, mainly in the V, thermostat housing, on the RH side, water pump and in front, where there is a couple of long hoses.

If fan, temperature should be normal on open road, too high in town.
If thermostat, trouble all the time.

And I can't resist this one.

Take a Disprin and phone me in the morning!

Added: an outside chance that the temperature sensor is faulty is possible.

Hi Paul
Like Dave (Stocktake) & others say, could be cooling fan or lack of !

If Temp Gauge read that Hot, you would have (should have) heard the sound of an Aircraft (cooling fan on full speed).

The V8's & V6's & 1.8T's need ALL fan speeds to be working.
(diesels not as vital)

Default KV6 Expert

Get it checked out by an MGR Specialist.

My ZT-T is at Austin Garages www.austingarages.co.uk

I have had several KV6 cars and Nick always sorts out mine.

HGF on the KV6 is comparatively rare compared to the 1.8 models though.

Best of luck

Ian
