This is encouraging, but the headline figure of £900 is essentially what the net cost was to remove the engine from a scrapped Lexus hybrid, sell the old battery for solar storage and then put that money towards the cost of the kit for converting to full electric, without labour costs. The more likely cost of parts for a full conversion is mentioned further down the article - £6000. Now, if you have a car you like which is in cosmetically good nick and whose engine is on its way out, this looks like it could be a fairly attractive proposition for what you get, which they say is "a bolt-in kit that would give you 200-miles of solid range, and 250kW rapid CCS charging, for about £6,000". But that's still before labour.
The 250kW rapid charging would be particularly useful, as it means that on a long trip you would only need 10-15 minutes to get an 80% top up. That's the sort of time it takes to do a refuelling stop anyway - I would often drive 150 miles, stop to refuel and for a comfort break, then finish the journey another 120 miles later. So if they're still doing this in a couple of years' time, I might look at having one of my 75s converted.

These sort of conversion costs are starting to look a lot more attractive, previous conversion costs, including labour, have all been in the £30,000 plus area.
In these times of increasing unemployment there might be some start up business opportunities in this area. But, would you be able to find enough crashed and written off electric vehicles to fuel this type of conversion? |

Very interesting.
I think this is their web site https://www.newelectric.nl/ Surly converting to electric is more environmentally friendly as no new car is designed and manufactured. macafee2 |
