Engine Temperature seems low MGZT 190

Hi everybody
What should be the running temp of my 190 V6 when warm it seems low at 80c when hot as i have a digital gauge and never see it go above 80 max and halfway on temp gauge.
I have fitted a new Thermostat and housing kit in the summer from Dmgrs but temp seems low after reading different posts.
I know this affects the fuel consumption and im getting 18mpg around town short journeys, not really bothered about this but seems take a good while to come up to temperature in the cold mornings.
any help appreciated.

The best way to check the running temp is through the ipk display, 19 then 7 press's of the trip reset button.

Temp sender could also be kaput, water pump could have broken impeller, temp should be around the 90-94 mark, the gauge is pretty much useless, except when it starts to go above the halfway mark, then its time to stop and check the coolant level.

Ok thanks will try but i thought the digital temperature display would be accurate fitted a year ago and new temp sensor.

Dont rule out a faulty thermo or sender tho.

If you've not run the Trip Screen Diagnostics before, here's the HowTo: https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=55585

You may have to practice a bit with the button presses before things fall into place. The press rate is critical. Once you're in, go down to section 7 and follow the instructions.

I suspect the trip screen method will show the same result as the gauges. Temperature sensors rarely go wrong, so logically you have actual overcooling. Did the temperature gauges show any different in the summer?

Many thanks i did the IPK test and it reads exactly the same 78 to 80 even after 6 miles trip so deffo running cooler, Really didnt want to start changing stat at this time of year , Is it possible to add a stat like on the diesel tophose ?? Also could it be a fan issue running all the time ?? Any tests i can do for this ?

If your fan is running constantly then you might have a faulty relay.

When I had my 220sd, I noticed the temp gauge was showing low temp. The heater was nice and warm, and engine temp seemed ok. I changed the temp sender, and everything went back to normal .

Hello Julian,

I'm afraid that it's looking like the thermostat you fitted in the summer is either the wrong spec. (for hot climates) or faulty. It's best to tackle this now as the weather will only get worse in January & February.

Fan operation won't make any difference to a cooling system with a correctly functioning thermostat. For one thing, it runs constantly by design when the air conditioning is running.

I'd recommend that you buy a genuine MGR thermostat from Rimmer's or this X-Part agent. If you can find the improved version with the three supporting legs so much the better.

And just a reminder to move both the clips on the plastic straight pipe fully outwards after reassembly for rigidity and freedom from leaks.

Hi Simon thats a bummer i didnt realise Dmgrs would sell me a summer one,How can you tell when its a sealed unit ? I will get one ordered from Rimmers or xpart .
many thanks for clearing up the issue of the fan running when aircon on.
